Srinagar, Dec 12 (ANI): General Officer Commanding (GOC) of 15 Corps of the Indian Army, Lieutenant General Syed Atta Hasnain, on Monday said the militants are active in border areas and waiting to infiltrate Jammu and Kashmir during the snowfall in the valley.Terrorist (Militants) still remains in the launch pad, just the minor difference is that may be in northern areas we used to witness them more Huraiz, Machal Or Kiran's sector in comparison with that we have more knowledge that in the areas like Udi and Leepa more attentiveness is given by the commanders," he said.

Hasnain said that due to the recent killing to various top militant leaders, the infiltrators are anxious to cross the borderline, so the forces are vigilant about the situation.

"During winters, in the months of December and February, they make desperate attempts to infiltrate and we presume that such attempts would continue in the future mainly because the strength of militants has declined and in the current year, 2011, most of the militant leaders were eliminated that is why their desperation level would enhance," he said.

Hasnain further said the continuous efforts of Indian Army was able to combat infiltration in 2011, and added that they are presently keeping a watch on the situation Afghanistan to prevent any such situation in the next year.

"Our grit of counter-infiltration was very successful and because of this, infiltration didn't happen. However, it doesn't mean that similar would be the story in 2012. They will keep trying. Mainly, such situations would depend on the situation of the other side of the borderline. Neither in Pakistan nor in Pakistan occupied Kashmir, but what would be the situation in Afghanistan," he said. (ANI)

Actually there has been a slight paradigm shift. Earlier, they used to try to infiltrate before snowfall started and closed the passes or at least made them difficult to cross. This time, they are planning on doing it during snowfall.

Three militants, including two Hizb-ul-Mujahideen ultras, were today arrested in separate operations by security forces in Baramulla district of north Kashmir.

During a routine vehicle checking, Hizb militant Mohammad Yousuf Bhat and his wife Shahnaz Bibi, a resident of PoK, were taken into custody by security forces near Rangee Mode in Pattan, 27 km from here, a police spokesman said.

A revolver, three rounds of bullets and a hand grenade were recovered from Bhat at the time of his arrest, he said.

Bhat, a resident of Shopian district in south Kashmir, had recently infiltrated into the Kashmir Valley from across the border along with his wife, the spokesman said, adding that the couple is being interrogated.

In another operation, security forces arrested two militants travelling in a vehicle near Muqam crossing, 55 km from here, and recovered two pistols, as many magazines and six rounds from their possession.

The militants have been identified as Mohammad Rafiq Lone of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen and Ejaz Ahmad Shah of Al-Barq outfit.

While Lone is a resident of Krankshivan locality of Sopore township, Shah hails from nearby Delina village, the spokesman said.

Not really. Infilt attempts are made as per proximity to area of ops. However, most of the jihadi vector towards the valley. The route from the west is across the LOC, they head towards, Hillkaka - Pir Panjal pass - Dubjan - Shopian.

The hills are not as difficult to cross due to lower altitutes in the Jammu-Poonch region.
The route from Pir Panjal pass - Dunjan - Shopian is/was under special highaltitute warfare teams.

Infiltration depends on many factors.

The defences and its state to include vigilance, if there is a change of unit and hence they will not be well conversant with the tricks employed in infilt, weather expected over a period of time, the expertise of the guides who will guide the infiltrators, the efficiency of the troops in the second line of defence, the state and efficiency of the sympathisers in that sector who will give the safe house or help in the logistics and so on.

If AFSPA is made null in some sectors, it will be the ideal area to concentrate for infilt.
