TOI LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh chief minister Maywati has come under severe criticism from opposition leaders for having made derogatory remarks about Mahatma Gandhi. While addressing a meeting of MPs and legislators of her Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) here Saturday, Mayawati called the Father of the Nation a "natakbaaz" (fake). She also distributed pamphlets condemning both Mahatma Gandhi and Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi for being insincere about the improvement in socio-economic status of Dalits. "Mayawati's attempt to run down the Father of the Nation will only prove counter-productive and she will have to pay for it," said state COngress spokesman Subodh Srivastava. "This only reflects her frustration on account of her failure to keep her monopolistic control over Dalits. It is high time she realises that Dalits are not her private property and they are well aware to see and understand the difference between what Mahatma Gandhi did for them and what Mayawati was doing for them," he added. Samajwadi Party state president Akhilesh Yadav said: "Mayawati's derogatory remarks against Mahatma Gandhi are clearly a reflection of her having not only lost ground but even her balance." Calling Mayawati's rant against Mahatma Gandhi "a shameful act", BJP spokesman Hriday Narain Dikshit said: "By terming whatever he did against untouchability as a drama, Mayawati has shown utter disrespect to the Father of the Nation." Srivastava also condemned Mayawati's move to hold protest demonstrations June 19, which is Rahul Gandhi's birthday. "Maybe she does not like the idea of a birthday being observed without forced collection of funds since she is so used to celebrating her own birthday solely to collect money and jewellery," he said. I personally don't agree with a lot of teachings and beliefs of Gandhiji but that doesn't mean I call him a fake and a "natakbaaz"... Does this female even remotely know how much Gandhiji has done for the harijans / lower castes ??? One must respect other peoples' views even though one may not personally agree with them, as in my case... Maybe somebody should teach her tolerance, or give her a lesson in history, or make her a member of DFI - we'll give her a lesson in history and also teach her tolerance

Who cares? The point is that she insulted the father of this nation. That's a big **** up on her part. That man alone was responsible for doing way more than any of these useless politicians out there will ever for this country or even world. We don't have to follow his teachings anymore, but we sure as hell have to defend his honour more than anyone else out there.

it is surprising to what depths people can fall to when it comes to gaining some brownie points in politics, but i doubt this will be well received by most part of the society and may be the big mouth that mayawati is, she might have just managed to further isolate herself from the electorate of the up, a good riddance if that is the end result and think for a second, she was dreaming of being the pm of our country. this is just a reflection of how low our politics and politicians have fallen to who have no national matters of importance to discuss but try and do character assassination, rather than this useless rhetoric it will be better if she were to try and address the numerous challenges her administered state faces which even today happens to be the poorest state of the country. people are know and appreciated for their acts and not words or rhetoric and the sooner she understands this the better for her, for her state and for the nation. quite a shame we have leaders like her in our country.
She and her ilk of low-life politicians doesn't know a thing about Independence struggle and what role Gandhiji has played in achieving this. She should be thankful that she is what she is now is because of people like Gandhiji, otherwise she would have been a maid or something hardly eeking out a life with a wife-beating husband. Another chapter in our sordid politics. No need to get hyper guys. Its another day in the life of our elected politicians. Her saying anything doesn't effect what Gandhiji achieved.
We (read = government, which is supposed to represent us) don't get "hyper" when terrorist from neighbouring country kill our own people in our own motherland, we don't get hyper when some white racist country attacks and kills our children/people (instead we attack ourselves calling each other racist) and we don't get hyper when some piece of shit politician calls the FATHER OF THIS NATION names cause of votes or god knows whatever goes in their mind.. But we DO get hyper about a Bollywood actor raping his maid and some stupid cricket match discussing it in lengthy threads like it's life and death situation. No shit this country is getting more divided based on caste/religion when we pick government which plays the minorities like fools and we turn our back on causes as big as this thinking "it's just another day in Indian politics". We also dream of being a world power but can't defend the honour of a man because of which we are even capable of having such a dream in the first place. Kudos.
Mayawati should look at Dr. Vijay Mallya as an example/idol. Even though he doesn't clearly believe in Gandhiji's philosophy of "Non-Drinking", but still he bought his belongings in the US auction and brought them to India. Thats respect. .
