Sticking to their guns: Marines place $22.5M order for the Colt .45 M1911 | Fox News

It's been called the greatest handgun ever made, and it has barely changed sine 1911, when the legendary John Browning designed it especially for the U.S. Military.

And now, the Colt .45 M1911 is making a big comeback, now that the U.S. Marines have placed a $22.5 million order for the Connecticut-made pistols.

The gun, which has been wielded on film by John Wayne and in real life by Sgt. Alvin York and Maj. Audie Murphy, was the standard-issue sidearm in the military for decades, until it was replaced by the Beretta M9 in 1985.

Why they are bringing back m1911s
as a better M9 is in service.its no doubt that m1911 is one of the best pistols ever built there was no good reason to replace it except that M9 was better.

They were looking for .45, Better stopping power perhaps..

Nothing better than re-issuing old American 1911..

Eventhough off topic how is the performance of heavier caliber ones like deseart eagle ones as military pistols?is the high stopping power compromises the accuracy ?why every SF and infantry uniys are going for relatively small caliber 9mms instead
Of 1 shot 1 kill .357 magnum rounds?

.357 is used by SF like GGN, But .337 & .50 Desert Eagle Pistol are big heavy and low payload..

.45 have better stopping power, Pistols not Huge size and payload is more or less same..

Is there any comparison, between .45 and the 9mm. Which one is better?

By the way, 9mm is standard NATO ammo, why on earth are they changing the common ammo?

.45 have more stopping power but little more recoil..

^^ You can compare other bullets here, Including 9x19mm & .45acp..

US were using .45 before they changed to 9mm coz of NATO style, Now they feel .45 was better in killing..

At the time the .45 ACP was adopted by the US Army, the .38 Long Colt was the standard cartridge.

.45 ACP - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The U.S. Cavalry had been buying and testing various handguns in the late 1890s and early 20th century. The .45 Colt Single Action Army had largely been replaced, even by some double action versions of the same. The Cavalry had fielded some double action revolvers in .38 Long Colt. They determined that the .38-caliber round was significantly less effective against determined opponents, such as the warriors encountered in the Moro Rebellion of the Philippine–American War, than the .45 Colt.

The 1911 is no doubt a top class pistol especially the improved version made by Larry Vickers. The only drawback is the 7 round mag.

In ,45 my favorite gun is the USP 45 followed by the 1911.

eh, 1911 is a good gun. but i think for easy dissemble/reassemble, magazine size there are better choice out there. berreta 92, glock, springfield, are all proven pistol.

as for ammo, i don't think solider allow use of hollow point, FMJ only per nato standard.
but still a train solider with 9mm will stop the guy doesn't matter is .45 or 9mm. also 9mm give more bullets. especially for modern gun with double stack magazine 19round 9mm or 15rd 45acp vs 7round of 1911.
