Suspected Maoists on Tuesday shot dead a police sub-inspector in Nuapada district of Odisha a few hours after abducting him, police said. Reports said about 10 alleged armed Maoists waylaid Kruparam Majhi, ASI of Dharambandha police outpost in the district (about 550 km southwest of Bhubaneswar), at about 11.45 am in a forest area when he was going on a motorcycle along with a constable, Debaranjan Sahu, to deliver a water tanker at a CRPF camp at Lodra in the Sunabeda forest sanctuary.

The Maoists took Majhi along with them, while letting Sahu go.

"After getting the information, the police launched an extensive search to rescue Majhi," said Nuapada sub-divional police officer PK Patra.

However, the police party spotted Majhi's bullet ridden body about three hours later at a place not very far from the CRPF camp, with his hands and legs tied. The abductors did not claim responsibility of his murder.

Sunabeda sanctuary bordering Chhatisgarh has been in the grips of the Mainpuri division of the Maoists who have been oppositing anti-Naxal operations in the area.

A police officer was kidnapped by Maoists and shot dead on Tuesday in a forest area in the Odisha district of Nuapada bordering Chhattisgarh, weeks after the abduction and unharmed release of two Italians and a BJD MLA in the State.

"A group of armed Maoists abducted the ASI and shot him dead. His body has been recovered," Director General of Police Manmohan Praharaj told PTI.

ASI of Dharmabandha outpost Kruparam Majhi was escorting a water tanker to the CRPF camp at Goudha with a constable on a motorcycle when they were stopped by a group of about 30 armed Maoists, Sub-Divisional Police Officer Prafulla Patra said.

Constable Deo Narayan Sahu was asked to leave and Mr. Majhi was taken at gunpoint by the Maoists into the forest, he said.

Mr. Majhi's bullet riddled body was found at a place between Bharuamunda and Lodra, some 5 km from the spot where he was kidnapped, Mr. Patra said.

The body was found near the Sunabeda Sanctuary, located close to Chhattisgarh.

Maoists, who infiltrated into the sanctuary and camped there recently from neighbouring Chhattisgarh were suspected to be behind the killing, police sources said.

The killing came close on the heels of kidnap of the two Italians in Kandhamal district and BJD MLA Jhina Hikaka in Koraput district by two different Maoist groups. All three were subsequently released unharmed.

The Maoists are already getting the jitters with the mere presence of the Army in Bastar doing training.

sir, odisha under maoist threat. repeatedly they are abducting VIP's,cop and killing them. we need search operation from evening 6 pm to morning 5 am. mainly they are taking shelter to villages where normal adibasish stays. so informer and sniper can help very tactfully. if i am being in charge of any company, i would prefer this operation strategies.
