Maha Kumbh Mela begins in Allahabad, thousands take the holy dip | Firstpost

Allahabad: Maha Kumbh Mela, often described as the "greatest show on earth", is all set to begin today in Allahabad, with millions of people from across the country as well as abroad expected to attend the religious gathering.

The Mela, held every 12 years, will go on for next two months and will conclude on Maha Shivaratri on 10 March.

Expecting a turn out of about 1.1 crore people to take holy dip today on Makar Sankranti, the administration has put in place elaborate security arrangements to thwart any kind of terrorist activity, prevent stampedes or any other type of law and order challenge.

Hope everything goes smooth without any loss of life.

The Maha Kumbh began this morning with lakhs of devotees as well as ascetics and religious leaders of various orders converging on the confluence of Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical river Saraswati in Allahabad for a holy dip on the occasion of Makar Sankranti. The inaugural day of the two-month-long congregation, was marked by the first "Shahi Snan" of 13 "akharas" wherein Naga Sadhus - a martial order of ascetics who move about either naked or scantily clad with matted hair and ash smeared bodies - marched to Sangam in processions with their leaders perched atop ornately decorated elephants, horses and chariots and musical bands in attendance in a unique blend of austerity and opulence..

Allahabad: It was a rare 'sangam' of technology and tradition on day one of Maha Kumbh 2013 Monday with Google map integration, GPS and 'flying cameras' making their advent in the 55-day festival, the biggest religious congregation anywhere in the world that is estimated to draw tens of millions from India and around the world.

The Uttar Pradesh government has also spent about Rs.1.17 crore on 13 gigantic LED screens, which dot the mela premises at vantage points in this north India town that is playing host to the mega event.

Large festivals and gatherings are very much a part of Indian life. It would be great to see a more organized set up using modern technology to upgrade both infrastructure, crowd management and emergency services to reduce the events of morbidity and mortality that are far too often related to such events in India.

Also, cleaning up the Ganges has to be a top priority. Granted this would be impossible without rehabilitating the feeding rivers as well.
