Photograph entitled "Outside of well, Cawnpore [Kanpur]" taken by Samuel Bourne in 1860. The picture shows the outside of the Bibighar Well in Cawnpore (Kanpur) where British women and children died. By 1860, a memorial had been built at the site. In 1948, after India's independence, the memorial was moved to another site.

Picture shows the Bibigurh house in which European women and children were killed and the well where their bodies were found.

The picture is of the Sati Chaura Ghat, on the banks of the Ganges River, where, on 27th June 1857, many British men lost their lives and the surviving women and children were taken prisoners by the rebels.
