Upgraded Leopard 2 MBT set for firing trials
Aselsan has completed development of its privately funded Leopard 2 main battle tank (MBT) upgrade solution and firing trials are slated to commence in the second half of 2011.

The Leopard 2 Next Generation upgrade – on display at IDEF 2011 in Istanbul – could meet a potential Turkish Land Forces Command (TLFC) requirement to modernise its fleet of 298 ex-German Army Leopard 2-series MBTs, pending the introduction of the locally developed Altay tank.

Aselsan has already upgraded 162 TLFC Leopard 1 MBTs with a new computerised day/night fire-control system (FCS) called the Volkan, and is also prime contractor for the Altay MBT FCS now under development by Otokar.
The Leopard 2 Next Generation features a new computerised FCS and a number of survivability enhancements. In addition, the vehicle's combat weight has increased to 65 tonnes, but Aselsan claims this has not compromised the mobility of the original version. Meanwhile the existing MTU 1,500 hp MTU powerpack and the Rheinmetall 120 mm L/44 smoothbore gun have been retained.
