If the report is true, it certainly disappoints me no end. India is missing a good opportunity to further its interest piggy backing on the US. The US will dump India and probably start setting up policies that don't suit India. India could well join hands so that it can be part of policy making that also helps her. China is a bloody bully an threat and has to be countered. If the US is committed to counter this by placing 60% of its warships in the Pacific, India should be happy about it as it allows India to pursue its agenda in the SCS vis a vis Vietnam and other friendly nations while China is sucked into a tussle with US.

1960s getting repeated and this time we have to blame ourselves.

Couldn't disagree more. Learn to fight your own battles. The most treacherous time in a nation's history, we have already survived pretty well. Now when we actually have the financial and technological strength and momentum going for us, you are advocating that we take a free ride instead. And its sure not gonna be a free ride.

Only this time we are equals. The free ride is in context with US China slugging it out and India securing its interests.

Bloody dumb foreign policy guys.

Re: India turns down US plans to counter China reported by Sudhi Rajan Sen in NDTV Ju

^^ We need to remember our experience with East India Company. Once they get a foothold in Asia, they will never let go.

Absolutely true! They would love India and china, the largest Asian countries to fight each other, and drain themselves, like they had Iran and Iraq fight each other!
Asia belongs to Asians, we might join hands with USA from time to time on the basis of mutual benefit, but we won't like to see USA in our backyard in long term. Reason is simple today it is China, tomorrow their guns might point on us.
All that is fine and dandy, but Asia is a very large continent and Asian Unity is a myth.

Going by the same logic, China would love to see Pakistan and India nuke each other making it the sole power in Asia

Re: India turns down US plans to counter China - NDTV

In geostrategy one cannot be emotional.

US is in whose backyard and what is the guarantee that some other littoral nation will not give the US what it wants in the Bay of Bengal?

Where will be the issue of militarisation of the Bay of Bengal then?

Has India the might to stop the US Navy from having a base in another country adjoining the Bay of Bengal or preventing the US Navy from having their naval vessels operating in the Bay of Bengal?

If the USN has berthing rights in Chittagong, who knows if in the future Bangladesh does not give naval facilities?

As far as China getting uptight if India plays ball with the US, has China bothered as to what India thinks when she unilaterally fiddles at the border or claim Indian territory are theirs?

When China acquires a Blue Water Navy, can India stop China from militarising the Bay of Bengal? They already have a base in Myanmar. How come India did not raise Cain when China got their Base in Myanmar and what could India do about it, in any case?

X-post from Javelin thread

Will Panetta's India visit salvage Javelin missile deal?
A dangerous flashpoint in United States-India relations faces visiting US Secretary of Defence, Leon Panetta, who faces tough questions from Indian officials on Tuesday, writes Ajai Shukla

The US State Department has slashed India's request for Javelin anti-tank missiles, offering instead a smaller quantity that Washington sources say is "less than half of what India has requested for."

Indian Ministry of Defence officials are furious that Washington, an avowed strategic partner, has pared down India's requirement of Javelin missiles, even while arguing that defence sales are a cornerstone of the US-Indian strategic relationship.

"This (US reduced offer) is a deal killer. Washington will not dictate the quantity of weaponry we need. This will severely damage the prospects of US vendors in future arms contracts," a South Block official said.

This unexpected rebuff stems from the US Department of Political-Military Affairs, a state department office that examines the political fallout of proposed US arms sales. Pol-Mil Affairs, as this department is called, often nixes or curtails arms sales because they might "destabilise the regional military balance."

Neither the US embassy in New Delhi, nor the Ministry of External Affairs, is prepared to reveal the reason provided by Washington for slashing the Indian request. The Ministry of External Affairs and the MoD have not responded to requests for comments.

US embassy spokesperson, Peter Vrooman, said, "We don't discuss individual sales. Secretary Panetta looks forward to having an exchange with the Indian government on a broad range of issues."

GOI ,I think wants to join SCO but the Chinnese are never going to let India in as long as we give assylum to His Holiness Dalai Lama which almost all Indians would welcome Him but for the Chinesse its an act of aggression and they are waiting for the right opportunity to disintegrate us one way or the other. Before we had the support of the Sovit Union that provided as an effective counter weight But now we can't anymore believe in the Russians .They need China now to again project themselves against the US . On a perfect world it is a good policy to stay non allained but the ground realities are completely defferent ,on the western front we have a radicalised pakistan hell bent on destroying us and on eastern side we have this commi-fasist monster with delutional imperalist fantacies. Even our smaller neighbours like bangladesh, nepal and sri lanka are not totally at our side.
Our politicians are mostly corrupt. Nepotism and corruption is rampent from the highest echalons of power to the lowest level. Being this the reality it would have been better to picky-back on the US for the time being till our condition improves on all fronts. This is not to be taken that we hav to be totally alligned with the US but we have to be flexible enough towards the US at the same time not compromising on our core defense and strategic interest. It is high time fo the Indian policy maker to wake up and same the coffee.

This pic signifies Indian foreign policy thinking ...

India Needs To Get On Board With the U.S

Leon Panetta In Delhi This Week.
India is in many ways a linchpin for U.S. interests in the region, with its influence on volatile countries to its west and its shared concerns about China to its east, something Panetta highlighted in a speech in New Delhi on Wednesday.

"We have built a strong foundation," Panetta said. "But for this relationship to truly provide security for this region and for the world, we will need to deepen our defense and security cooperation."

In Afghanistan the United States appears to be pushing for deeper Indian engagement that includes training Afghan security forces on a larger scale.

To taken on PRC India needs sustained double digit economic growth for at least next two or three decades.Since this is not going to happen because of weak Delhi and strong regional interests we need to engage with the US.
