DRDO recently displayed Pragati Tactical Missile which is export variant of Prahaar missile in ADEX 2013 in South Korea, DRDO has already been given government approval for exports and that it may be offered to friendly countries if anyone shows interest in it.

Pragati Tactical Missile which has range between 60-170 km and might be offered to Vietnam. According to sources close to idrw.org, South Korea could be another potential customer but that can be ruled out since S Korea already operates American made MGM-140 Army Tactical Missile System (ATacMS).

Pragati means Progress in Hindi, is it an apt name for a missile?

Missile are meant for destruction :p

What's your take on this guys?
they should have kept it 'prahar'.... and add praharV - for Vietnam or something like that

Takath (strong), Khoon (Blood), Shakthi (power) would have been better.

May be It gives Pragathi to DRDO in Defense Exports.

But Will India give these systems to Indonesia, considering the Australia factor??

Vietnam and Phillipines will be good. We should develop Ship based anti ship variants of this Missile and supply that to Phillipines.

at a later stage , when we hve become EVEN more proficient - we can add japan ,south korea and even
TAIWAN
to the list

never mind indonesia - until they distance themselves from pro packland bias

we can supply phiippines - on condition that the usa underwrites the payment

India should produce enough for it's own needs before focusing on exports. Akash SAM maybe
another good option?

But with the lesser Number being orderred by the Army, Exports may well help the Industries to Survive and refine themselves. Also it reduces the burden on Tax payers to sustain the Def Industries.

I think we should be more open to supply weapon systems (down graded) to others too. I would like to pit the Akash against a Tornado or Typhoon in a actual combat.

For Example we can supply akash, pragathis, LCA, Brahmos, Attack and support heli's, Stealth frigates, DRDO AWACS etc to the Argentina. And we train them in those equipments. Do some stirr up in their pride and see them invade the Falklands. Deploy handlers to Beunes Aires and oversee the war against the Royal Navy. It should give us enormous learning to see how our systems are against the technologically superior Brits and how we can use them to make considerable damage or even win a war.

sounds crazy, but we should start playing the power role in international arena!!

LF we need 200-300 TEL (6-12 missile per TEL) for our use, what we really really need is about 1000-1500 Nirbhy ASAP.

what i fear is any large numbers will mean less for Indian army which means more imports.

more Howitzers and MBRL's, attack helicopters,HELINA. These weapons i picked
intentionally because they can be used in all terrain unlike cruise missiles.
Pragati looks like a good system i am suprised it is so quickly ready for export?

Why not? Russia has a 'missile' (well, actually a rocket) by the same name.

Semantics apart, if you look at "Pragati," the underlined part is indicative of the speed.

But the main complaint of Indian Army is regarding the on time delivery of the domestic equipments. Which the industry counter by saying they are unable to fine tune their systems due to lesser number of orders and so lesser automation in the assembly lines.

The exports means more cash flow and more investments in automating the process and fine tuning the system. more orders for the vendors and sub vendors and thereby increaded production rates. Then the Army will get the confidence to order more.

I do not see a shift toward indigenous weapons in a meaningful way;
until the politicians are thrown out of the weapons acquisition process.

But still our industry can survive under exports. If the Army is not ordering, how long do you think they can do RnD's and sustain their production lines? without orders it will be even more difficult to attract talent. Atleast we can do something with meaningful exports.
