Korea shopping for billions worth of military technology from Russia
SEOUL - South Korea has been negotiating with Russia to receive advanced defense technology as part of debt repayments, officials said Jan. 18.

Russia has so far provided South Korea with weapons worth $740 million as a way of repaying about $1.3 billion in debts dating back to the days of the Soviet Union.

Seoul is now in talks on the transfer of cutting-edge technology from Moscow, the South's Defence Acquisition Programme Administration said.

"We have yet to complete negotiations with Russia," a spokesman for the state agency controlled by the defense ministry told AFP, without giving details.

Yonhap news agency quoted a military source as saying the Russian technologies include long-range radar and a defense system against an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack.

North Korea is thought to have been developing an EMP system that could disrupt South Korean military communications and radar, it said.

Since the 1950-53 Korean War, South Korea has been heavily dependent on U.S. technology for its arms acquisitions.
Items on the shopping list

- S-400 class long range SAM radar(To be used with KL-SAM)
- EMP protection
- Jet engine fan/compressor cooling technology
- Soyuz fuel cell(for use with 3,500 ton AIP sub)
- Russian EO/IR

There are 6 other items, but they are unknown for now.

Nuclear sub reactor isn't on the list, that was transferred a decade ago and Koreans are building "civilian" reactors with that tech until a political agreement is made(particularly with the US) to greenlight the nuclear sub.

With Koreans also going for S400 it proves that Russian air defence systems are indeed better than americans.

HUH!? Since when did SK get into Russian bandwagon? But it is great to see that even ROK is moving the independent way by diversification. Already the Japanese Diet has been wary of changes and has revoked the White Paper to open up militarization and possible exports gradually. You know, CCP is going down a needlessly difficult hill when it can easily win hearts and minds with peace and become an Asian favourite.

Alas! विनाशकालय विपरीतबुद्धि ॥

Would US allow that tendency? Hatoyama once tried getting "independent". US is for sure reading the minds of little brothers'

Only Indians who are doing the other way choosing Patriot over the S-400,it would be better to fund the S-500 then engage in its domestic production:)

I dont think we do.. :)
We rejected both BMDs, and favoring our own product for now..

Btw, I should mention India had lots of support for SK in this matter, Its even possible that Russia may allow SK in PAK-FA project discreetly..
