Infrastructure development: Pakistan invites Bahrain to invest in Gwadar, energy

Malik pointed out that China would invest $33 billion over five years in Pakistan, of which $18 billion would be pumped into infrastructure projects.

ISLAMABAD:
Pakistan has offered Bahrain an opportunity to invest in Gwadar Port and its energy and mining sectors, encouraging the Gulf monarchy to take advantage of the liberalised investment regime that in return will help Islamabad attract capital to boost its flagging economy.
"Bahrain has expertise in oil and infrastructure projects and Gwadar Port and the energy sector may be attractive for the Gulf country," said Dr Musaddaq Malik, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister.
He was speaking at the Bahrain-Pakistan Business Forum, held on Wednesday to mark the current visit of King of Bahrain Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa to Islamabad.
As many as 17 memoranda of understanding were signed between Pakistan and Bahrain and between Bahraini government and Pakistani investors. The agreements were aimed at venturing into new areas and expanding existing facilities set up in Bahrain by Pakistani investors.
Malik pointed out that China would invest $33 billion over five years in Pakistan, of which $18 billion would be pumped into infrastructure projects. He suggested that Bahraini investors should become equity partners of China to explore the opportunities.
He told the investors that they could also set up power plants in Pakistan – an area where the country offered a minimum 17% guaranteed rate of return with sovereign guarantees. In return, Pakistan can provide human capital and invest in the food sector, the areas where Bahrain is in need of external help.
Trade between the two countries stood at just $250 million per annum while in the last six years Bahrain invested only $18.7 million in Pakistan, said Miftah Ismail, Chairman Board of Investment, at the conference.
Ismail asked Bahraini investors to invest in Thar coal and copper and gold mines in Balochistan. The kind of technology and financial resources required to discover coal, gold and copper were missing in Pakistan, leaving the mines unexplored, he said.
The value of Thar coal is estimated at $9 trillion while the size of Pakistan's economy is only $250 billion. Similarly, he said, copper mines were spread over 30,000 square kilometres and contribution of the mining sector to the economy was less than half a percentage point, 0.4% of GDP to be precise.
Ismail was of the view Bahrainis were more interested in the banking sector and equity market while other sectors of interesjt could be healthcare, education, food, textile, manufacturing, information and communications technology, industrial, professional and commercial services.
A lot more needed to be done to improve the dismal figures of bilateral trade, suggested Dr Hassan Fakhro, Bahrain's Minister of Industries and Commerce while speaking at the conference.
He asked Pakistan's business community to invest in the food sector that offered them immense opportunities.
Commerce Minister Khurram Dastgir offered Bahrain an opportunity to invest in the textile sector in order to get advantage of the 10-year duty-free access to European markets. In the same manner, Pakistan could also benefit from the free trade agreement between Bahrain and the US by establishing industrial units in the Gulf state.

King of Bahrain vows to enhance military cooperation at JSHQ

Moreover, Pakistan had previously aided Bahrain in setting up its naval forces and 18 per cent of the Gulf state's air force comprises Pakistani personnel. It is estimated that over 10,000 Pakistanis are serving in security services of Bahrain.

Bahrain is weakest of the link among the Sunni group of Arab collectives especially with the predominant Shia population and perhaps the Pakis are being used in anticipation of such crack(s) in the future. In fact one can say the Pakis have pimped themselves into such arrangements since their "touch" was imminent last time (albeit like what they did for Bangladesh, Baluchistan, POK people and others as well as the human rights abuse they committed). The Pakis have to show some importance. One can say Pakistan have one of the largest groups of Sunni Muslim fighters groupings in the region and they are the leaders for the Arab world - that must be conveyed to Baharain and Saudis (would love to hear their response).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bahraini_uprising_(2011-present)

They are being paid and its a short-term boost for both. But with Pakistan one always knows that it wont be a smooth sailing for them and their partners.

Also more succinct with the overall theme - anyone know what the position would be if India walked up to Bahrain and offered a substantive strategic dialogue since they have experience in providing self-determination with the demographics peripherals that Bahrain needs to deal with. Is it better to deal with Pakistan - better to deal with India for Bahrain national security. The pragmatic Bahrain leaders have to be shown and taught the truth. Why did Saudi Arabia come to India after Pakistan ...

Pakistan is a skilled labor exporter for many armed forces in the ME. Eversince the sixties our pilots have served in arab airforces and trained some of their best pilots. This includes UAE, Qatar, Bahrein, KSA, Jordan, Lebanon and Lybia.
Pakistani pilots fought in both arab wars and recorded many kills against IAF in 1967 and 1973.

Pakistan as a muslim country is capable of providing security umbrella to most of the ME coumtries. It's already been doing that for decades, nothing new there.

Pakistan needs to say that more - they are the leader of the Arab world and have one of the largest group of skilled Sunni Muslim Fighters in the world. In fact they have to say it with pride that they are a (first) Nuclear Islamic Weapons state (albeit if the capability is true). The Mecca needs to have such protection from such great warriors and people. The Shia people and Sunni people have a decider among it ranks the (weaker) links are warned. The Arab world can focus on economics while Pakistan safeguards their security.

After the above has been announced wait for the responses by the regional and global players.

If the Pakis Nuclear sphere and direction is moved a single inch away from India the Pakis will enter into areas they have no understanding and in areas and regions and subject matters where they have huge deficiency and risk of significant damage to their well-being.

Thats when the truth will hit Pakis on the face. Pakis existence is only there because it is anti-India and once that is displaced it will become unstable.
