Kazakhstan is the first big winner of China's Belt-and-Road project. Kazakhstan is a land-locked geographically-large country.

China is the transportation hub of Asia. Kazakhstan is a spoke that connects to the Chinese hub. This arrangement provides Kazakhstan with modern and affordable transportation links to the rest of the world.

Kazakhstan now has reliable access to the worldwide marketplace through China.

Another Asian land-locked country is Laos. There, China's Belt-and-Road project will come to fruition soon. "The China-Laos Railway, about 642 miles long, is scheduled to be opened in 2020. It will then take about 10 hours to travel between Kunming and Vientiane."

China-Lao rail gathers steam | TTR Weekly

"LUANG PRABANG, 7 June 2017: A fast rail line from China to Laos will run straight through Luang Prabang, Lao PDR’s famed World Heritage town, when it opens December 2021.

Officials confirmed late last month that the construction of the Laos-China railway is gathering steam as teams bore and drill foundations at 75 tunnel and 167 bridge locations on a route that will stretch 414 km from end-to-end.
...
Chinese officials said the railway will be designed for electrified trains travelling at 160 km per hour (passenger trains), or 120 km per hour for freight trains.

Construction of the single 1.435 metre gauge track will take five years to build at a cost of USD5.8 billion, with 70% funded by Chinese investment and the balance by Laos.

The Lao government has prioritised railway development to transform the country from landlocked to a land-linked country with a system that is environmentally friendly and more efficient than highways in the long-term.

I am pretty sure Russia has been providing Kazakhstan with transportation links both East and West. China only goes East.

The Russian railway system is old and creaky.

Also, Russia plays politics with its transportation. Russia will cut off a country or demand higher fees whenever it feels like it.

In contrast, China conducts trade relations on a fair basis and honors a contract. Transhipment charges will always remain reasonable. Additionally, China's transport system is modern and efficient. China has multiple large cranes and computerized container ports to quickly and accurately move 20-foot-container cargo.

Russia has a reputation for slow transport due to limited capacity.

Great move. Next step ideally should be to connect Almaty to Gwadar through CPEC and open an alternative southern route for Kazachstan.

Russia and Kazakhstan are as close as any two nations can be with a strong alliance. China is the unreliable one claiming land that doesn't belong to them. Shipping containers East just to send them West is the dumbest idea on the planet.

Why don't you write to The Astana Times and argue with the Kazakhs?

They think you're wrong.

Obviously, the Kazakhs know what's best for themselves. The Astana Times have spoken. China is the important logistics link for Kazakhstan.

Shipping containers east to China is actually the smartest choice. Water-borne shipment is the cheapest. Thus, Kazakhstan can ship its goods through the shortest-distance-possible by land through China and reach a modern seaport in Qingdao.

Actually I don't see any evidence that they are using China to ship to Europe. The INSTC is being built to hook Central Asia to everyone to the West.

Why can't you understand the simple efficiency of China's Belt-and-Road?

If Kazakhstan wants to access all Asian markets then the train cargo is shipped east to China's Qingdao.

If Kazakhstan wants to ship by train to Europe, it can use China's Belt-and-Road that connects Kazakhstan to Europe via Turkey.

If Kazakhstan prefers water-borne shipment to the US or Europe, it can opt to ship the train cargo to Qingdao.

The various shipping options on China's Belt-and-Road are common sense.

Kazakhstan to raise annual gas exports to China to 10B cu.m.
15 January 2018 12:08 435

Поделиться: ASTANA. KAZINFORM National Company KazMunayGas JSC and China National Petroleum Corporation held bilateral negotiations in the furtherance of the agreement signed earlier by the heads of the two states, Kazinform cites the press service of the national company.

During the meeting, the sides agreed on the future increase in the Kazakh gas exports to China, up to 10 billion cubic meters per annum. They underlined the need for further development of the gas pipeline infrastructure, as well as modernization and capacity expansion of the existing gas pipelines.

As of the end of 2017, the volume of natural gas supplied from Central Asian countries to China via the Central Asia-China gas pipeline increased by 13.4 percent up to 38.7 billion cubic meters. Since the launch of the transnational gas pipeline in late 2009, a total of 203.2 billion cubic meters of gas have been transported to China.
