Karachi on edge as 'MQM workers' storm ARY News office
KARACHI: At least one person was killed and several others injured as protesters allegedly belonging to the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) stormed on Monday ARY News office in Karachi for not providing the party with ‘due media coverage’. MQM raised Anti-Pakistan slogans.
The protesters belonged to the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), SSP police Saqib Ismail said. “MQM workers fired shots at the ARY News office, ransacked the premises and set fire to a police mobile,” he said. A motorcycle, and a police mobile was set on fire while shops at Zainab Market and nearby markets were closed.

Major arteries of the city, including Sharah-e-Faisal, II Chundrigar Road also witnessed severe traffic jam after the attack. JPMC focal person Dr Javed Jamali confirmed the casualty, saying at least nine were injured.
The development came in wake of the party staging a hunger strike at the Karachi Press Club [just a few steps away from the ARY News office] against what it terms as injustices against the party, extrajudicial killings and arrests of its workers and political victimisation.
The MQM has held sway over Karachi for years and law enforcement agencies, its opponents and many residents have accused it of racketeering, abduction, torture and murder in its bid to maintain power. Masked men created the situation: Ali Raza Abidi.Alluding to a conspiracy against the MQM, MNA Syed Ali Raza Abidi said the “MQM has been protesting since past three years non-violently. Regretfully masked men pre-present at Fawara Chawk created these deplorable scenes.”
He requested party workers to maintain discipline and remain peaceful.Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif condemned the attack. “It is an attack on freedom of press and expression, he said in a statement. The premier directed the authorities concerned to bring the culprits to task on an immediate basis.
Army chief calls DG Rangers. Army chief General Raheel Sharif telephoned DG Rangers, directing him to maintain law and order in the city at all costs. According to the ISPR, Gen Raheel asked the Rangers chief to take action against those who are responsible for disrupting peace in Karachi, Hyderabad and Sukkur.
Rangers seal Nine Zero, detain MQM leaders. Following the orders by the army chief, Sindh Rangers initiated action against the MQM and took party leaders into custody.The paramilitary force also raided and sealed party headquarters Nine Zero, as well other unit and sector offices in the city.
MQM leaders Farooq Sattar and Khawaja Izharul Hasan were taken away by heavy contingents of Rangers as they arrived at the Karachi Press Club to address a press conference.
