Re: Japan, India to discuss military plane sales during PM Manmohan Si

The fact is there is nothing India can do for Japan while USA is incapable of. So, why Japan need to buy itself 2 insurances.
When Japan was isolated and looked down post war, it was India who came forward and gave the required support to Japan in whatever little way it could in those days, not necessarily in terms of money...

Now see India is the only country Japan wants to sell its military hardware as it is barred by it constitution regulations... I see a big opportunity here for a close co operation between Japan & India in times to come"¦

Japan need to come out of its Pacifist attitude"¦

Technologically most advanced Japan & rapidly growing economic giant India will be a DEADLY combination in years to come"¦

India will reciprocate Japan's gestures in whatever way it can

If India adopts a policy of unconditional reciprocation to Japan, then any Sino-Indian cooperation will become a non-starter.

Who is the stronger nation: China or Japan?

The question is whether this technologically most advanced Japan is willing to transfer its key technologies to india? Or is india willing to accept the second chair to Japan forever?

Our indian friends here don't realise what they are expecting from Japanese!

To India, Japan is very very special friend, Indian value the help Japan gave us during the freedom struggle... Period...

If India can live with China's help to Pakistan in nuclear & Missile technology just only to contain India... I do not understand why China cannot live with a unconditional reciprocation from India towards Japan???

Some of my friends, who spend considerable time in Japan, speak very highly the respect Japanese have for Indian culture... India also does love Japanese equally...
Who is the stronger nation: China or Japan?
Our friendly relationship with Japan is not hostage to relative strength of any other third country... China or no China"¦

The combo of two ancient civilizations of Indian & Japanese will be deadly one...

I believe so, I foresee a change in Japanese outlook on the Nuclear co operation with India very soon...

India treats friendship with Japan on a equitable basis... Neither will take the second chair"¦ none deserve it"¦

Does India have the ability to help Japan in making a nuclear bomb?
when help comes to play, inferior or superior, India CAN definitely help Japan and also has the ability to do so.

@no smoking

Ok, what can india do for them?
Nothing much, we are just a huge market for them, with virtually infinite investment potential & development opportunities. All that potential is going to be realized in next 2 decades, albeit at a slower pace that that happened in China. Militarily, with Japan being under the US nuclear umbrella, Indian couldn't offer much to them, except for making some statements offering moral support. Add some token support through military (naval) Exercises in IOR, South China Sea & Western Pacific theater together.

Defending Japan from thousands miles away? Or start a land war when Japan confrant China in the sea?
There is no role that India is capable of playing in a Japan-China conflict (even at diplomatic level) & India realizes that.

They are not making decision slowly, they just don't have enough resouces to support any significant decision. With a debt of 200% total GDP and declining economy, Japanese really don't have much spare money.
Well, no. If you are talking of resources, one needs to remind himself of the fact that Japan remains world's third largest economy & among the biggest FDI investor in China. Japan's biggest weakness is shared by China as well, i.e. huge grey-ing population. Chinese economy would experience the effects of that within 2 decades.
As a matter of fact, with a recession-hit Europe & a slow US growth, Chinese economy is already bearing the brunt, in form of much slower growth that it has experienced in past 2 decades, or so.

It can be safely concluded that the best days for Chinese economy are past it, quite similar to the Japanese economy. Unlike India, which is yet to realize its potential & play in accordance with its weight.

If not a Tech transfer, they can open up their industry in India.

Re: Japan Offers To Sell India 2 Shinmaywa US-2 Amphibians

Amphibious planes from Japan top Navy's shopping list

India is planning to acquire at least 15 amphibious aircraft for the Indian Navy from Japan and is setting up a joint working group to decide the terms of the cooperation. These could possibly include joint production, operation and training on the US-2 amphibious aircraft. The Indian Navy earlier issued a request for information (RFI) for the aircraft. Canada's Bombardier, Japan's ShinMaywa and Russia's Beriev had offered their aircraft to meet the requirements.
Speaking to FE on conditions of anonymity, a senior officer said, "All the three aircraft failed in the field evaluation trials (FET), carried out on calm and rough seas. Also because there is a lack of experience of the Indian Navy in amphibian aircraft operations."

The need for the amphibian aircraft was felt mostly for geo-strategic reasons. "The amphibious aircraft will be placed in the Andaman and Nicobar islands in the Indian Ocean, which is the base of India's Tri-Command, meant to keep a vigil on China. The aircraft would spearhead any littoral warfare operations in the Indian Ocean," explained an officer.

The sale, if it happens, will be the first of a finished product made by Japan's homegrown defence industry since rules were imposed restricting the export of weapons systems and other equipment. It would also mark a strengthening of the alliance between India and Japan, which both see rising China as a threat to regional stability.

"The aircraft will be used for maritime patrol, anti-surface warfare, electronic intelligence and search-and-rescue missions as they are not equipped to carry on any weapons load."

During a recent visit by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to Tokyo, the two sides firmed up plans for Delhi to purchase the US-2, a domestically-developed aircraft used by Japan's armed forces. The aircraft has a range of 4,500 kilometers and can be used for strategic interests in the Asia-Pacific.

"If the US-2 is exported to India for civilian use, that would be the first case of exports of Japanese-developed weaponry used by the defence ministry for civilian use," according to Japanese officials.

ShinMaywa opened a sales office in New Delhi last year and has been promoting the plane here, it also participated in the Aero-India 2012.

In 2011, Tokyo eased the decades-old ban on arms exports, paving the way for Japanese firms to take part in multinational weapons projects. Reportedly, the talks on sales "are based on policy decisions made a few years ago that Japan has to support its defence industry by diverting military technology to civilian use for export".

what advantage do these planes have other than being amphibious?? This plane is designed
for air sea rescues and the price tag is hefty should have bought more p8-i's.
Can't these planes launch covert special operations for MARCOS even in rough weather.

must we buy every piece of equipment offered to us?

if there is indeed a requirement for this aircraft, then we should ask them to get the production line shifted to India, even if that increases overall costs

These planes seem to have a defensive function for the price of these planes deadly offensive weapons
Can be bought, few good qualities range and landing on high tides but overpriced imo

Onodera set to pitch plane to India { US-2 amphibious aircraft }
Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera is making preparations to visit India from Oct. 8 to advance diplomatic talks to export Japanese US-2 amphibious aircraft, ministry officials said Saturday.

Onodera plans to meet with Indian Defense Minister A.K. Antony with the aim of strengthening cooperation in maritime security matters with India, which has territorial issues with China.

Japan is also at odds with China over the Senkaku Islands, a group of uninhabited islets in the East China Sea controlled by Japan, which China claims as Diaoyu and Taiwan as Tiaoyutai.

During talks in May in Tokyo Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his Indian counterpart, Manmohan Singh, agreed to set up a working group to study the possible export of US-2 amphibious aircraft used by the Maritime Self-Defense Force.

The two leaders also agreed to conduct joint drills involving the MSDF and the Indian Navy on a regular basis. Onodera is expected to promote the usability of the US-2 for the Indian military, which is also apparently considering buying sea rescue aircraft from other countries, such as Russia and Canada.

Amphibious aircraft are also for Search and Rescue and would do well to be with the Coast Guard.

While configured without weapons platform, there is always scope to add electronics etc for anti submarine ops.

In civilian use, it can be an excellent platform for seaside resorts for tour around Andamans, Goa, Kochi etc.
