BURDWAN: Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind will provide advocates to fight the UAPA case slapped against the four accused in the Khagragarh blast case.
Siddiqullah Choudhury, general secretary of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, said this during a rally in the historic Curzon Gate of Burdwan on Monday evening.
"So far, no advocate has appeared in the courts on behalf of the two arrested women — Alima Biwi and Rumi alias Razia Biwi. We have decided to provide them legal support. I sought funding from common people to fight this case. Unless the court pronounces them guilty, I am not convinced," he said.
He also warned that the Mamata Banerjee government will be in trouble if it allows NIA, NSG and CID to conduct raids in madrassas across the state. "Remember what happened to the previous Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee government? Your fate will be the same if these raids do not stop immediately," he added.
Choudhury said that his party will set up a special legal cell and has already contacted a few advocates to fight for the arrested persons.
Apart from the two women, two more persons — Hasem Mollah of Khardattapara in Purbasthali and Abdul Hakim — have been arrested. Hakim was injured in the bomb blast on October 2. While Mollah and the two women are in the custody of NIA in Kolkata at the moment, Hakim is recovering after a surgery at SSKM Hospital. NIA is keen to take Hakim in their custody since he is the only living male member arrested from the blast site.
On Tuesday, neither the ED team nor the NIA team was seen in Burdwan. The NIA officers are going on Diwali leave and a new group of officers will soon come, a source said. NIA has also stopped giving updates on the Khagragarh blast case on its website since October 16.
