Cameron will visit Jallianwala Bagh to express regret, won't apologise

Cameron will visit Jallianwala Bagh to express regret, won't apologise

Cameron's visit and expression of regret for what happened will stop short of an apology – but will make it clear he considers the episode a stain on Britain's history that should be acknowledged.

Other British politicians and dignitaries – though no serving prime minister – have expressed regret about the incident before.
On a visit to Amritsar in 1997, Queen Elizabeth called it a distressing episode, but said history could not be rewritten. However, her husband, Prince Philip, courted controversy during the visit when he questioned the higher Indian death toll.
"What happened in the past happened in the past," Aamir Khan, Bollywood film star, told reporters after a meeting with Cameron on Tuesday.
"I don't think we can hold the present generation of Britishers responsible for what happened ages ago. It is not fair. I don't think that they owe us an apology for what happened a century ago."

He is just going there to get a 'kick' and enjoy inwardly the 'glories' of the Raj days!

And anyway, I think this latest fad of wanting apologies for historical atrocities is quite useless, since it is mere words and one cannot change the barbarism that was perpetuated.

I would rather have these incidents hang on the conscience of the descendants of those who perpetuated these barbarisms.

The number of atrocities british have committed in india, cameroon might need to have a separate month long visit where he needs to go around the country and express regret.

But seriously if he is thinking that by expressing regret for jallianwala-bagh to a sikh PM, he may be able to get some deals signed upon then this act of regret will not help him. He may regret about this "regret" business.

sir, the time British won over Marathas in 1818, Indian economy was around 4 times bigger than British that time. they had many Indian traitors, many tactics they used and then they got 'everything' in India, its wealth and also an Indian Army which won rest of the war for them. we do know that Indian Army was back boon of British's efforts in WW1, WW2. and from here, you would just assume a man of street who suddenly became Mayer of that same city, will their coming generation forget that pride they had in past? :nono:. India will always have to have 'pig talks' with those British who always have a reason to engage India someway, somehow :tsk:

GDP on PPP by 18th century

GDP of India: $90,750mil
GDP of China: $82,800mil
GDP of Western Europe: $81,213mil

even if we have a close look on the data's then we find that even by 1820, GDP of India was around $111,417mil, as compare to total GDP of Western Europe at $159,851mil as below. it may also because of the fact that Marathas lost heavy wealth during the 15 years of war with British till 1818 :meeting:

Marath Empire

The Maratha Empire (Marathi: मराठा साम्राज्य Marāṭhā Sāmrājya; also transliterated Mahratta) or the Maratha Confederacy was an Indian imperial power that existed from 1674 to 1818. At its peak, the empire covered much of what would become India, encompassing a territory of over 2.8 million km².[2] The Marathas are credited for the re-establishment of Hindu rule in India.

Marathas remained the preeminent power in India until their defeat in the Second and Third Anglo-Maratha Wars (1805–1818), which left Britain in control of most of India.

Why should he go there in the fear place? We don't need their regrets or apologies. That Infians are slowly taking over Britain and the Brits are making a beeline to do business in India is an indication of who won in the end.

For how many incidents will you demand an apology? How will the apology even matter?

Right, but one must not let anything go just like that. The list can be made any day.

My question is very specific as media is trying it make it regrets vs Apology. If India hasn't asked for then this whole media masturbation is just unnecessary. Any gesture for UK PM should be appericiated.

Question still remains. Why the hell is he going to Jallianwala Bagh in the first place?

Chanakya says respect, money and apology should be accepted without apprehension.

I think we Indians have either become over formal or let it go types ('Janey do') or are too busy accumulating things as tomorrow is doomsday that we have lost the art of taking mileage even from crocodile tears.

Something that opens up old wounds is certainly not business.

Will he acknowledge that over 3000 were massacred that day and not 300 as the Brits put it? Will he even call it a massacre?

Or may be having closure; his advisors might have suggested so.
