April 29, the maiden flight of D1101-- J11D's No.01 prototype

although the Su35 import process is still moving on, the indigenous effort to further improve the homemade J11/Su27 serial never stopped..

recently ,J-11D single seat Air Superiority Fighter---the latest evolution varient of J11 family shew up from the years' rumors finally...this project is the further evolution/improvement of the J-11B fighter (the fully localized Su-27sk with indigenous WS10A engine and 14XX planar slot array antennas Doppler Radar, other part/sub-system are based on the full TOT agreement of Su27sk with the some improvement according to the latest R&D and tech which China Aviation Industry mastered)...J-11D could be seen as the successor of J-11B which the production is finished after around 150 jets delivered (but the two seater varient -J11BS is still in production)...the improvement including:

1. AESA radar(inclined mounted array and radome )with new Avionics architecture
2. Improved/Latest batch of WS-10A Engine
3. Improved structure with more composite
4. fully digital FBW
5. IFR probe
6. RCS reduction method
7. Next-Gen A2A weapon package: PL15 MRAAM+ PL10 SRAAM

J-11D has quite close relation to another important project, J16 twin-seat Attacker which has been under development for quite while and is very close to the final approvement. J11D's modern Avionics architecture should be based on the one on J16 but it might be a simplified version.

the surface of this single seat fighter project also explained the slow and tough Su35 procurement negotiation on the way...Russian sources repeatedly said that the export Su35 would be as same as those in RuAF and any change would cost more time and funds which is very 'unrealistic '...as we said before, the PLAAF want a customized Su35 using china provided AESA radar and Avionics with the China weapon package intergrated...the most attractive parts of Su35 project are the new 14.5 tons thrust 117S engine ,the flight control with vectoring nozzles intergrated and the improved airframe structural design which is stronger with more payload and longer service life and has more inner space ...

IF J 11 D is so good then why the need to purchase SU 35 from Russians.

Maybe because :

Good job with AESA radar.

another view angle shot of J11D ... the J10B/C style inclined antenna and radome are striking feature...

=====================
Is their any pic of this 14xx tr radar.
as a model on the heaviest fighter in PLAAF, it has enough equipment compartment, antenna diameter space and power supply, so the 149X radar on J11B could be the most powerful one of the contemporaneous planar slot array antennas Doppler Radar projects for various fighters which were all developed by the CEIT group including the 1492 Radar on the J8F fighter, 147X on the J10A and KLJ-7 on the FC-1...etc...they share quite a lot of commonalities on knowledge ,tech , Process and the level of components.
-----
the back end-- power and processing units..

the front end-- antenna... I can't post those which I got via unofficial source, but this one about the radar on the J8T fighter(export project) could be a great reference to help imaging how the planar slot array antenna may look like..

==============

BTW, here's the another AESA radar project for Su27 size radome ... it's from the own R&D team of AVIC group ...

the J16's Radar ---but its antenna array is not mounted at an angle...
left- front end, right - back end...

the T/R modules with antenna element (8 modules in one)

this radar's flying test bed base on a J11B prototype

J16's first prototype --No.1601.

J-11D is using WS-10 as well. Only J-15 is not using the engine, hopefully the WS-10H can mature faster.
