VSSC does a lot of work on CFD especially with regard to satellites. To this end the scientists at VSSC have developed a homegrown application called PARAS or Parallel Aerodynamic Simulation that they have been working on for over a decade. PARAS ran on the Intel architecture earlier.

"To get close to 200 teraflops, they would have needed 5,800 CPUs. The code had been written on the x86 architecture. We offered them the same architecture, use the same room and offer a quantum jump in performance with a hybrid architecture of CPUs and GPUs. By adding 400 GPUs to the existing 400 CPUs, they got to 220 teraflops," commented Dhupar.

In comparison, Tata CRL has a 170 teraflops system with 3600 CPUs built at a cost of $30 mn. VSSC achieved 220 teraflops with an investment of $3-3.5 mn. "Only the code that was more parallelized had to be tweaked and this gave them a 40x performance boost on one account and a 60x boost on the other. The chairman made a statement that we should be looking for petaflop level performance," said Dhupar.

ISRO mulling more launch sites

Sriharikota: ISRO today said it planned to have more launch sites as the frequency of satellite launches is slated to go up in the coming years.

"We need to provide more number of launch pads, since the number of launches from ISRO is going to go up," ISRO Chairman K Radhakrishnan told reporters here.

We will do a feasibility study soon on sites "which can be something like another Sriharikota."

The outlay for these new sites maybe less than Rs 1,000 crore, he said.

Listing out the launches, he said the GSLV launch is scheduled for the second quarter of 2012. There are two more PSLVs - one (PLSV C-19) carrying RISAT-1, a microwave remote sensing satellite,another (PSLV C 20) carrying an Indo French collaborative satellite Saral and small other satellites which will study oceans, he said.

ISRO also plans to launch Astrosat and Aditya satellites in the coming years.

The agency is also scheduled to launch Chandrayaan 2 at end of 2013 or beginning of 2014. "It will be launched with a GSLV," another ISRO official said.

On status of work on Mark III, P S Veeraraghavan, Director, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre said "it is progressing well,with tests on three stages of S 200, L 110 and C 25 to be completed."

On promoting nano satellites from the student community, Radhakrishnan said ISRO's objective was to give them practical experience on how to work with a satellite.

New Delhi, Oct 20 (PTI) Fresh from the successful launch of the joint space mission for weather observation, India and France today eyed another milestone of a new satellite dedicated to environment monitoring.

At the bilateral talks here, External Affairs Minister S M Krishna and his French counterpart Alain Juppe welcomed the successful launch of Megha-Tropiques satellite for research on climate and weather systems.

"The forthcoming launch of SARAL, a joint satellite to study sea surface altitude would be another milestone in space cooperation," a joint statement issued after the discussions said here.

Saral would help ocean scientists gather accurate data on the rise in the sea level which could threaten the low lying and coastal areas of the country.

The joint statement said that India and France encouraged Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the French National Space Agency (CNES) to pursue further cooperation in Earth System Science and Climate within the framework of a memorandum of understanding signed in December last year and to explore new fields of cooperation in the future.

ISRO''s Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle successfully launched the Megha Tropiques satellite on October 12 to study the water cycle and energy exchanges in the tropical region covering 20 deg on either side of the equator.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) has turned its attention to the coastal area of Krishna district as part of its search for a suitable location where it can set up a rocket-launch pad.

Isro scientists have conducted feasibility studies for the site near Nagayalanka mandal in the coast. Indications are that the state government is keen to get the facility established in the hinterland of Krishna and Guntur districts. The Isro wants to have more launch pads to increase frequency of the satellites in future.

At present, Isro has a capacity to launch a satellite once in two months, which becomes once in a month after additional launch pads are set up. It is also planning to send satellites which can carry more weight in future. The Isro has proposed to set up a third launch pad at Satish Dhawan Space Centre (Shar) at Sriharikota. The officials prepared a project report and sent it to the government for approval.

Isro director (projects & public relations), Mr S. Satish (Bangalore) said, "We have conducted a feasibility study at Nagaya-lanka in Krishna district for an alternative space pad." He also said that the government has to give permission for setting up a third launch pad in Shar.

Krishna district joint collector, Dr Gaurav Uppal said, "Isro team visited Nagayalanka and inspected some places."

The minister for excise Mr Mopidevi Venkata-ramana said, "The Chief Minister Mr N. Kiran Kumar Reddy recently conducted a meeting to enquire about land required for the proposed Isro project in Krishna and Guntur district borders."

Making it clear that it was against the use of space for warfare, India Wednesday said it is developing capabilities to protect its space-based assets such as satellites.

"We don't believe in use of space for warfare. Our philosophy is to use it only as resource"¦ We have to make sure that our assets are protected and access is not denied. DRDO has a programme to protect our assets in space," DRDO Chief VK Saraswat told reporters here.

Noting that India needs to take care of this area in the light of the fact that other countries are gearing up their space based offensive programs, Saraswat said, "DRDO has a programme to protect our space based assets and to ensure continuity of access there."

On new threats emerging in the area of cyber space, he said two DRDO labs are working in this areas to develop suitable technology.

"There are new threats emerging in the field of cyber warfare. Two DRDO labs are working specially in this area. We are trying to see various ways to make our team competent in this regard so that we can monitor the flow of cyber traffic and look at the ways to encrypt and disrupt them," he said.

DRDO took up the project following a number of recent cyber attack on government website from groups of hackers based outside India.

The GSLV (Geo-Synchronous Launch Vehicle)-Mk (Mark)-III that is to be launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for experimental purposes next year is designed to place a communication satellite in orbit, according to K. Narayana, honorary adviser and former director of the Sathish Dhawan Space Center (SDSC), ISRO, SHAR (Sriharikotta).

Inaugurating ObCom 2011, the 3-day 4th International Conference on Recent Trends in Computing, Communication and Information Technologies organised by the VIT University here on Friday, Dr. Narayana said that the communication satellites have revolutionised the communication system. Megatropiques satellite was launched by ISRO recently to measure the weather in tropics. This satellite is expected to help in tropical meteorology. The ISRO has developed a launch base of international standards.

He said that the ISRO's maiden attempt at evolving software standards commenced in 1984 with the software Quality Assurance Group (SDAQ) activities. Later, it standardised the guidelines for development of real-time Software. A full-fledged standard was adopted in 1992 and released for implementation in all ISRO centres. It adopted the IEEE 12207 standard for ISRO Software development at all centres and released the same in 2006. Dr. Narayana said that the future possibilities in ISRO include Internet access to space, space-specific protocols, interplanetary missions, space tourism and space hotels. Sankar Viswanathan, Vice-President (Administration), VIT said that 477 million people were using the Internet in China, as against 100 million in India, 98 million in Japan, 27.9 million in Vietnam and 27.4 million in Pakistan. M. Khalid, Senior Professor, School of Computing Sciences and Engineering (SCSE) said that SCSE in VIT has set up the facilities for designing various computer-based equipment including hand-held devices. China is marching ahead of India in designing computing systems.

Integrated Space Cell set up for acquiring space capabilities

NEW DELHI (PTI): Steps have been taken for providing a dedicated satellite facility to the armed forces and an Integrated Space Cell has been set up for acquiring space capabilities, Defence Minister A K Antony said Wednesday.

In written reply to a question, Antony told Rajya Sabha that "Satellite requirement of the armed forces are being met from the existing facilities. Steps have also been taken for provision of dedicated satellite facilities for the armed forces."

On development of space-based capabilities, he said, "An Integrated Space Cell (ISC) under Headquarter Integrated Defence Staff (HQ IDS) has been constituted in August 2009 and it is coordinating for acquiring requisite space facilities."

Antony said government has mechanism in place to effectively exploit space resources for the defence and security of the country.

Replying to a question on shortage of equipment in armed forces, he said, "Modernisation of armed forces is a continuous process based on threat perception, operational challenges, technological changes and available resources."

The process is based on a 15 year Long Term Integrated Perspective Plan (LTIPP), five year Service Capital Acquisition Plan (SCAP) and Annual Acquisition Plan (AAP), he said, adding the 12th Five Year Plan has been finalised in respect of Air Force and is under finalisation for Navy.
