ISRO's Communications Satellite GSAT-6A Suffers Setback In Space: Sources
https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com...-isro-silent-on-gsat/articleshow/63562646.cms

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) that usually shares the information over the current position of a satellite has kept mum about the GSAT 6A satellite which was launched into space some 48 hours back. The last update over the location of the GSAT 6A satellite came in at around 9:22 AM on March 30. The information came in after the first orbit raising was done. If reports are to be believed, the GSAT 6A satellite has suffered a massive setback in the space. In order to correct the unexpected, the engineers and scientists at ISRO are working round the clock to bring situations back to normal.

As per sources, the power systems of the satellite are facing some problems. The reports have not yet been confirmed by the senior officials of Indian Space Research Organisation. Since there is no confirmation of the incident yet, it is hard to say if the satellite can even be retrieved. The GSAT 6A by ISRO is a communication satellite made to serve the defence purposes. As per reports, the following satellite has cost ISRO something around Rs 270 crores. ISRO’s GSAT 6A was successfully launched on March 29 from Sriharikota using Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mk II.
A source told TOI that the second orbit-raising exercise that took place at around 10 AM went normal but a few minutes later there was some problem in communications which was noticed by the scientists present. Also, the customary official statement on the manoeuvre did not happen and no word was sounded on the third orbit raising exercise. Earlier in 2017, ISRO had faced a failure on August 31 after it failed to launch IRNSS 1H satellite.

Its rare that our satellite systems have failed after it has been put in orbit properly. But sh!t happens. Hope its recoverable, else , deorbit the satellite instead of leaving it as space junk (assuming that it is prebuilt in)

The second orbit raising manoeuvre was scheduled for 10.51am on Saturday, and well-placed source said that the operation was also completed with a successful firing of the LAM engine. The agency received data from the satellite for about four minutes after the second orbit raising operation, after which the it went blank, a source said.

Initial analysis points to a power system failure, but Isro has not officially confirmed anything.

TOI attempted to get official confirmations from the Isro headquarters, Isro chairman Sivan, Isro Satellite Centre, and the agency’s communications team and other senior scientists. However, none of them denied or confirmed the development, while some scientists who were not directly involved with the project claimed ignorance.

Oh Well!!!
Some ambiguities on classified operations should remain classified. This is also a mil. satellite. .The media presstitutes can in the mean time sell some hot cookies.

Doesnt matter if the satellite is lost, research and development should never stop. Fix the issue and try to send it over again.

yesterday, the rumor that there was something wrong with the satellite has been spreaded on twitter...even we have heard about it on our Space enthusiast forums.

someone said the apogee is around 5000km and the Perigee Altitude was also raised although the initial orbit sent into by the GSLV was not very high. so the Sat could be able to stay in the current orbit for quite a while and there is quite some time for the scientists and Engineers to try to save it according to the pre-arranged planning before the reentry

and ISRO did have the confirmation this afternoon

Status Update of GSAT-6A .... Apr 01, 2018

The second orbit raising operation of GSAT-6A satellite has been successfully carried out by LAM Engine firing for about 53 minutes on March 31, 2018 in the morning.

After the successful long duration firings, when the satellite was on course to normal operating configuration for the third and the final firing, scheduled for April 1, 2018, communication from the satellite was lost.

Efforts are underway to establish the link with the satellite.

GSAT glitch: No contact with satellite, but we're hopeful, Isro chief says

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Isro today lost contact with the GSAT-6A communication satellite, less than 48 hours after it was launched
  • We are unable to establish any contact with the satellite, but our teams are on the job continuously, the Isro chief said
  • Adding that the space agency is still hopeful of chances of recovery, Sivan said it all hinges on re-establishing contact

Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) chairman K Sivan has seen a major setback + in the first mission to be launched by the agency since he took over, something most space agency chiefs have not had to endure. Eighteen hours after the GSAT-6A lost contact with its ground station, Sivan spoke to TOI about the mission. Excerpts:

what exactly transpired after the 2nd orbit-raising operations?

Everything went on as prescribed, a picture-perfect launch and two textbook orbit raising manoeuvres and then the satellite suddenly stopped communication. We are yet to determine what exactly went wrong.

When a satellite gets de-linked, it goes into a ‘safe mode’, is that the case here?

Generally the spacecraft returns from ‘safe mode’ in a matter of minutes, it returns in about one to five minutes. This is, however, very unusual as it did not happen. We are unable to establish any contact with the satellite, but our teams are on the job continuously.

What are the chances of recovery?

We are hopeful, but as of now there is no contact with the satellite. If we are just able to speak with the satellite, we can get it back to working as there are several redundancy mechanisms including back-up power. But everything hinges on re-establishing contact.

Recently someone suggested that ISRO systems responsible for launching sat was compromised with malware, what are the chances that this is an attack I suspect the probablity is very high. We should check the software system of sats already there. US and China gain from our losses in space and military tech.

ISRO computer had malware, could’ve been hacked, say researchers
By Mithun MK | Express News Service | Published: 12th March 2018 06:11 AM |

Last Updated: 12th March 2018 08:38 AM | A+A A- |

HYDERABAD:A malware infected computer of ISRO exposed India’s premier space research agency to hackers, claimed Indian and French security researchers on Sunday. The researchers also claimed that hackers could have taken control of ISRO’s command rocket launches using the vulnerability. Express has not been able to independently verify this claim.

READ HERE | TNIE Exclusive: Ever used India Post? Well your information is vulnerable to hacking

The trojan malware, known as XtremeRAT, was detected in ISRO servers in December 2017 and was reported to the agency by an Indian researcher. ISRO reportedly responded and resolved the issue only after French researcher Robert Baptiste reached out to the agency on Twitter. “ISRO in their conversation with me informed that that investigated and found a UTM login port that was not mapped internally to any systems. They claimed to have disabled that port for now,” said Baptiste quoting ISRO’s communication with him that Express has seen.

The XtremeRAT malware was found in ISRO’s Telemetry, Tracking and Command Networks (ISTRAC) that provides tracking support for all the satellite and launch vehicle missions of ISRO. “The malware was probably infected on a computer that had access to servers used for Tracking and Command (TTC) services that help launch vehicle lift-off till injection of a satellite. A computer which was probably used to command rocket launches and separation of a satellite. I say ‘probably infected’ because no one knows which computer was used,” said the Indian researcher in December 2017.

The researcher says he stumbled on the ISRO vulnerability while using the search engine Shodan, that lets users find specific types of computers connected to internet using a variety of filters. “If Shodan can be used for searching hacked sites, I thought, why not search for infected servers? I filtered it down to region and ISRO showed up in the scan results,” said the Indian researcher.ISRO has not yet responded to Express’ request for a comment on the issue.

Resercher says search engine Shodan led him to ISRO’s vulnerability. “I did not dig any further as anything beyond that will probably be illegal,” he added. So what is XtremeRAT? It’s a commercially available remote access Trojan (RATs) used by hackers to conduct cyber espionage. There are numerous RATs that are available for free and can be purchased online, mostly from hacker forums or the dark web. The malware allows the hacker to dig deep into a specific target’s servers and databases and even sell off the access rights of their victims’ systems and their data to others.

“If infected with a trojan, the attacker owns the computer. The hacker can command the computer to do absolutely anything he wants. He just has to use the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) to access a computer. Has there been a data loss? most likely yes,” says the Indian researcher. Express reached out to ISRO’s public relations officer for a confirmation but did not receive a response. The Indian researcher claims he also tried to reach out to ISRO multiple times but got no response. He reached out to Computer Emergency Response Team and they responded to his email saying they will look into the issue. “However, no action was taken. I was about to give up and then I thought of contacting Robert Baptiste. He tweeted about it and then they seemed to magically care about it as the issue was in the public,” he says. Researcher says, the malware has hit sectors like --Energy, utilities, and petroleum refining.

One would assume that the satellite manufacturer would build in some redundancies specially with powering propulsion systems and batteries. I hope it's not an internal sabotage.
