The Racist British Empire

British imperial policies in the Indian subcontinent led to the deaths of over 30 million Indians during the rule of the Raj. Learn how these genocidal policies in India and other British colonies were rooted in concepts of racial superiority and social darwinisim, with their result being the biggest nightmare in human history.

Another take on permanent settlement, from a Bengali point of view:
BANGLAPEDIA: Permanent Settlement
Permanent Settlement Concluded by the Cornwallis administration in 1793, Permanent Settlement was a grand contract between the east india company government and the Bengal landholders (zamindars and independent talukdars of all denominations). Under the contract, the landholders or zamindars were admitted into the colonial state system as the absolute proprietors of landed property. Besides being turned into proprietors of land, the zamindars were endowed with the privilege of holding their proprietary right at a rate which was to continue unchanged for ever. Under the contract the government was barred from enhancing its revenue demand on the zamindars.

Though the zamindars had the right to transfer their land freely by way of sale, mortgage or gift, their raiyats were denied such a privilege. They had the customary right to hold the land hereditarily subject to payment of rent regularly, but no right at all to transfer the right in any form. In relation to government, zamindars had of course one obligation to perform. It was to pay the government revenue demand absolutely punctually. The zamindars were warned that in case any of them failed to pay the kist at the stipulated date "a sale (in auction) of the whole of the lands of the defaulter, or such portion of them as may be sufficient to make good the arrears, will positively and invariably take place." (Section 7, Regulation 1, 1793)

The Brits did not conquer overnight. These guys came as traders. East India Company did start as a spice trading enterprise. The first notable arrival of a Brit was actually a guy called Thomas Row.

Thomas Roe - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The way I see it,Brits were master at spy and statecraft. They first came in 1604,bid for their time and struck in 1757. They successfully penetrated the existing political and trade networks, and manipulated them at their will.More than technology, what aided them was their superior understanding of Indian politics of the age.

We have read the "exploits" of these civilized savages as teenagers in history exams to pass our school certification test. What we now, as grownups, in the age of information have is an opportunity to critically analyze, dissect to the finest detail how they conquered this great land, and the horrifying precision with which they destroyed us. Our efforts will go along way in preventing another such Armageddon. We owe this to the future generation. After all, those who do not learn from history, are doomed to repeat it !!

Don't know if the issue was addressed in the original post, but the British use Irish and Scots, two peoples they had already subjugated, to subjugate India and its peoples. And they used native troops in India as well. Diabolical genius, it was.

What the British did in India was it's own doing. No unity in the subcontinent. People were more bothered about their own small states. The brits massaged egos where it worked or used the gun where it didn't.

The lesson of the Raj is for us to be united and not get screwed again in te name of caste, language, religion etc.

The videos are quite an eye opener. We knew about the famines and the deaths, the horror of it escaped the clinical description in a history book.

Churchill wanted Indian troops to die for British empire in WW-2, but was not ready to supply rice to famine hit Bengal.

Ask Lord Wavell's grave!
