The Indian Air Force will conduct its first ever day-night exercise and display its full combat capability during 'Iron Fist' to be held at Pokhran firing ranges here from February 22, 2013.

Work at the new air strip in Pokhran range has started and will soon be operationally ready for this mega event. IAF sources said all preparations of the program has been completed.

President Pranab Mukherjee, air and defence attaches of 50 friendly countries are likely to witness the full combat power of the IAF during 'Iron Fist'.

The pre-firing demonstration and rehearsal for the first ever day and night event will be in December last week. About 100 different aircraft Sukhoi 30, Mirage 2000, Jaguar, MIG 21, attack helicopters, UAV and high-tech AWACS will display their potential, an official said. The transport aircraft taking part in the exercise will include AN-32, Embraer, IL-76, IL-78 and C-130J while Mi-17V5 and Mi-35 attack helicopters will constitute the rotary wing ingredients.

The Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) will be used to monitor the mammoth exercise, while an unmanned aerial vehiclewill stream live video images of the targets set for destruction. The air defence activities will include firing of surface-to-air guided missiles.

In addition to several aircraft participating from all IAF commands, many standby aircraft in air and an equal number on the ground will make the exercise one of the biggest air power demonstration ever. Trialsof few newly acquired equipment are also likely to take place during the show to check their efficacy.

Mock radar sites, tanks, marshalling yards, terrorist camps, runway, BMP, blast pens and convoys are among the few targets that the IAF pilots will seek to destroy during the exercise. Para-drop and troop insertion of Garudas (IAF's special force) to neutralizea mock terrorist camp will also be on display.

Such fire power demonstration will be a collective display of skills and accuracy in weapon delivery by pilots at the end of their training year. The exercise will also aid commanders and planners to attain better insight intothe IAF's potential and the deployment capabilities of aerial weapons, said defence spokesperson Col S D Goswami.

Our enemy is no more the old enemy, they too have credible technology, I agree with Brahmos that they will be flying their AWACS to try and detect what they can.....

Most Important event in this exercise is the LCA Tejas will participate in bombing PGMs as well as firing R-73 air to air missiles in simulated war situations..

India flexes air muscle: Air Force to conduct its biggest exercise in a decade | Mail Online
This will be the LCA's first outing in an IAF live-fire exercise. President Pranab Mukherjee is likely to attend one of the demonstration sessions along with defence minister A.K. Antony.
After the two internal drills, IAF combat pilots will fly to the Nellis Air Force base in the USstate of Nevada for the Red Flag exercise.
The IAF had earlier participated in the Red Flag, a multinational training in which real battlefield situations are simulated, in 2008. Eight Su-30 MKI fighters had undergone the rigorous exercise, winning accolades for the IAF's professionalism.

IAF holds exercise 'Iron Fist' in Pokhran

IAF holds exercise 'Iron Fist' in Pokhran - The Times of India
JAISALMER: In a breathtaking display of air power, Indian Air Force (IAF) aircraft blasted away targets during day, dusk and night in a fire power demonstration, code named'Iron Fist' at Chandan field firing range in Pokhran on Sunday. The dusk and night phases display were a first-ever by the IAF. While a Airborne Warning and Control System was used to monitor the mammoth exercise, an unmanned aerial vehicle streamed live video images of the target destruction. The air defence demonstration included firing of surface-to-air guided missiles.
Air Officer-Commanding-in-Chief, South Western Air Command, Air Marshal AK Gogoi and other senior officers witnessed the exercise. Gogoi reviewed the full dress rehearsal and gave directions on fine tuning of certain aspects.
More than 60 aircraft including frontline fighters - Mig-21 Bison, Mig-27, Mig-29, Mirage-2000, Su-30 MKI, Jaguars, TejasLCA, transport aircraft namely Hercules, AN-32 and helicopters - Mi-17 1Vand Dhruv Mi-35 participated in the exercise. Other unseen force multipliers included mid-air refuellers, AWACS and UAV. The day phase displayed the strike capability of ground attack fighter aircraft. The dusk phase displayed the war-waging capabilities of helicopters. The final phase by night showcased two major aspects of air power - counter-air operations and counter-surface operations.
A Mig-29 flying low and supersonic at 1250 kmph leaving in its wake a deafening sonic boom signalled an explosive start to the exercise. This was followed by a photo-reconnaissance mission bya formation of three Sukhoi-30 MKI aircraft. Three waves of fly-past by a combination of Jaguar, Mig-21 Bison, Mig-27, Mig-29, Tejas andMirage-2000 fighters followed before the armament delivery phase.
An array of targets including mock radar sites, tanks, marshalling yards, terrorist camps, runway, BMPs (infantry fighting vehicles), blast pens and convoys were selectively destroyed in precision attacks by IAF pilots using bombs, rockets and missiles. Both precision-guided ammunitions and conventional armament were used in the display.
