I can understand comments about a Chinese rip off, but since when has Russian tech depended on copies from the US? The reason the drone is down with Iran is a Russian weapons system.

Russian aviation tech has always been superior to American systems. It is through pure economic might that American managed a more diverse program. Yet until a few years before the collapse of the Soviet Union, no American fighter was anywhere as good as Russian fighters. With the Russian economy stable now, it wont be long before they regain their pre eminence in aviation systems.

Taking a cheapshot at the Russians, really?

Russians aren't habitual copycats like China but they won't mind taking a peek in when the opportunity knocks at the door.
I bet this drone would be ripped apart (may be not literally) and studied like Monalisa's painting.
Exciting times for Russian-Chinese technicians :)
But in all this, there are consequences for already strained US-Iran relations. This tense silence and occasional flutter feels like a countdown for something big to come.

What is Iran's missile capability? They've got anything to reach the US?
If not, they're in trouble.

Well, of course they will take a peek. Much like the US took a peek into the Mig 21 when the Russian pilot defected. But saying here comes the next gen Russian drones ripped off from American ones is silly.

[h=1]Iran: We will reverse engineer RQ-170[/h]Press TV Report :Iran has announced that it intends to carry out reverse engineering on the captured RQ-170 Sentinel stealth aircraft, which is also known as the Beast of Kandahar, and is similar in design to a US Air Force B-2 stealth bomber.

so Iran would be hot destination for Russians, Chines and who so ever want to look at US drone and stealth tech (who has weapon to sell Iran), also sensors and communication equipment on UAV would be of great interest to all.

We would also dont mind to get 'dekho' at the drone and to collect some samples from its surface (we too have drone programme). BTW the color is bit odd. Looks like drone has suffered damage at the base area that is why it was shown covered from that area.

It is also apparent that drone has crashed and not shot down as no damage to upper surface, if it was flying. at 50,000 ft any malfunction would have cause it to glide to surface, where it was pick up by Iranians.

So this year two tech are out of Uncle sam's garage one was new stealth helicopter down in Pakistan and other is this UAV. I can understand stealth helicopter incident by UAV in Iran was useless risk they would have used Satellites, you just cannot violate any sovereign state's airspace, does't look like accident.
