Iran unveils 'indigenous' drone with 2,000km range

Iran has unveiled what it says is a new "indigenous" long-range unmanned drone capable of flying over most of the Middle East, state media report.

The Shahed (Witness) 129 had a range of 2,000km (1,240 miles) and could be equipped with bombs and missiles, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps said.

It is reportedly capable of carrying out reconnaissance and combat missions.

Last year, the Iranian authorities displayed a US drone which they claimed to have brought down electronically.

RQ-170 Sentinel

The US insisted that Iran neither shot down the the RQ-170 Sentinel nor used electronic warfare or cyber-technology to force it from the sky. They blamed a malfunction.

Later, the head of the IRGC's aerospace programme, Amir Ali Hajizadeh, said it was trying to build a copy of the drone. It is not clear whether the Shahed 129 bears any resemblance.

Iran unveils 'indigenous' drone

Iran has unveiled its own, "indigenous" drone which it said was capable of flying over most of the Middle East, media report. The Witness 129 unmanned drone has a range of 2,000km and can be equipped with bombs and missiles, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps says.

Last year, the Iranian authorities displayed a US drone which they claimed to have brought down electronically. Iran's state aerospace agency then said it was trying to build a copy of the American unmanned aircraft.

Its unveiling followed a major naval exercise in the Gulf by the US and its allies, to which President Ahmadinejad responded with an ambiguous "We have all the defensive means at our disposal and we are ready to defend ourselves."

All Data of Captured US RQ-170 Drone Decoded

TEHRAN (FNA)- A senior Iranian commander announced that the country has extracted all the data and information existing in the intelligence gathering systems of the United States' highly advanced RQ-170 Sentinel stealth aircraft which was captured by Iran last year.


"All the intelligence existing in this drone has been completely decoded and extracted and we know each and every step it has taken (during its missions)," Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Aerospace Force Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh told reporters here in Tehran on Monday.


The commander further revealed some of the data taken from the aircraft's intelligence system, and added, "The US President (Barack Obama) had told the Israeli officials that the drone was tasked with spying on Iran's nuclear program, but our experts found after decoding the drone that it had not performed even a single nuclear mission over Iran."

"And this reveals that Americans are treating the nuclear issue (of Iran) as an excuse" to conduct hostile moves, including spying operations, against Iran.

I honestly don't see how this will help them in any way come time for a war. Also, autocratic regimes tend to make fitting timely announcements for public consumption.
