Suleman Khan, an MSc final year student at the Institute of Physics and Electronics, University of Peshawar (UOP), has made a low-cost wireless bomb defusing robot that will provide an extra line of defence for bomb disposal squad (BDS) personnel.

The robot was put on display during a day-long project and poster exhibition held by the institute at the UoP on Wednesday.
Talking to The Express Tribune, Khan, who hails from Mardan, said the robot's main objective is to provide remote-controlled analysis of a suspicious packet. Additionally, the robot is also meant to allow users to manipulate the packet using the robotic arm, provide visual feedback from the site, and ensure user-friendly controls.

He said the robot is capable of defusing bombs weighing up to 21 kilogrammes from a distance of 15 to 20 metres, and has a wireless camera for live visual transmission.

Apart from having the ability to tunnel view an object, the robot is also capable of carrying out experiments in hazardous environments and espionage activities, added Khan.

"The robot was built under a budget of Rs100,000 over a span of three years," Khan claimed, adding the invention takes commands using wireless technology. "It allows the squad to defuse bombs from a safe distance, instead of trying to do so with their bare hands."
Khan said deteriorating law and order in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) and Fata had motivated him to design this project.

He maintained if the government support the project, its capacity could be enhanced to locate and defuse explosive devices weighing up to 40kg from a distance of 60 metres.

Re: Inventive thinking: Student displays prototype of bomb-defusing ro

Though 2-3 firms in pakistan manufacture such robots with even more capabilities

But for a student who himself has funded the project is indeed a big achievement

Exploding and Defusing bombs is the most seeked after career in pakistan hence some breakthroughs here and there are no biggies.
Now those from exploding field will come with a something else to see through this robot. Game continues in pakistan.

Why dont you think that anyone - Pakistanis or Indians - feeling good or happy about Pakistani kids building robots that defuse bombs or about firms coming up with fertilizers that cannot be converted into explosives, are kinda sadistic in nature?

Not sure whether it will be used by the GoP or not, but just make sure that the Taliban don't get their hands on it. Seeing the current trends these terror organisations have people in every field.

You dont give a damn, but we have to give a damn when you claim of making a car running on water.
We have to give a damn when you claim of tallest building in world.
We have to give damn when you claim of launching a league that will be years ahead of IPL.

World gave a lot of damn when you said OBL is not in pakistan and you are in with war on terror.

Because the present situation in pakistan deal with this so

there are many western countries developing such robots for defusing bombs.

many such claims are made by india as well

Beside this OBL was found in pakistan?what has india to do with this?when usa cant pull anything of pak than how can india

the better is that if indians cant do anything they should remain silent about this

In a short period of time this will go into "Pakistani Lies and Denial Thread" because the technology is nothing new and has been there for years and operational :D

Well said. Check out this thread:

http://defenceforumindia.com/forum/pakistan/48130-pakistani-lies-denial-thread.html

This thread lists all the Paki boasts/lies and subsequent denials. If we follow Paki news closely I am damn sure we will get many many more to add to that list. It is quite likely that all this type of "Paki child prodigy" news will also be denied eventually.

Re: Inventive thinking: Student displays prototype of bomb-defusing ro

You see, Indian engineering students have done this 3 years ago

The paki copied it from Indian students :D :lawl:

Abhimanyu will save bomb squad lives

This invention may ensure there are no Hurt Lockers around. And bomb squads across the country will only be hoping that the invention passes muster even though it would put them out of action.

Two students from the Sapthagiri College of Engineering (SCE) have designed and developed a manually-controlled robot, Abhimanyu, that defuses bombs.

In fact, Abhimanyu can do everything that a soldier can in a combat zone, armed as it is with a wireless camera, a flashlight, a gun, a laser beam and a full operational car.

The idea of Abhimanyu was born in the minds of the students after seeing countless security personnel venture out to battle the 26/11 terrorists in Mumbai.

"The deaths of our security personnel in the 26/11 terror attacks inspired us to start this project. If one uses a military robot in such emergencies, the lives of many a soldier can be saved," Nitesh Kumar Guddu said.

"Abhimanyu is a remote-controlled robot equipped with devices like wireless camera, light source, a gun, laser beam and a fully functional car. It can be used to defuse bombs as well as for other military search operations, like patrolling sensitive areas that are curfew prone, and also as a home security system or to inspect minefields before a bomb squad steps in." he said.

Abhimanyu has peacetime utility as well.

The robot is disabled-friendly, thanks to its flexible arms. "People with disabilities can use a remote and monitor the robot's movements on a screen. They can thus get the robot to fetch items from around the house for them," Nitesh explained.
The duo took six months to develop the robot, but had to construct a low-cost model due to lack of funds.

"We have provided only a low-cost solution for the military sector. We would like to develop an automatic robot that can defuse bombs. But, for that, we need support from government agencies. We spent Rs15,000 for developing one piece; the US army would have spent thousands of dollars for developing such things," Rajaneesh Bhat said.

Following the testing phase, Rajaneesh and Nitesh have begun developing their design and adding more features to it.
"Abhimanyu has a few vulnerabilities. It cannot work underwater or climb a steep incline," said Rajaneesh.

"Our aim is to make it completely automatic so that it can both detect and defuse a bomb. The flaws in the current design can be overcome by adding a few components. We are hoping that government agencies like the DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation) will fund our project," hesaid.

a student effort with his own funds..

in pakistan quite a few firms manufacture such robots already...

Remember that pakistan the only country in asia to be a member of IQ4

Haan haan kyun nahin... you developed 7th Gen Fighter Aircraft already but not disclosing it or else US would copy it. Pakistan the original Silicon Valley in the world.

im not echoing respected member farhan at all ....... but i must be missing something here ?

why would or rather should india give a damn when pakistan makes those 4 claims above ?

each time they have been proven faulty or non-accomplished - so why would india care ?

why not instead let them build on their ....... "reputation"

hehehehehehe ...... sir ( or madam ) ..ahem not really what i meant , but anyway we're friends eh ?

as india claims to be suceeding globally, so therefore they might accept my idea of success for both nations; which would be for india to form a commercial corporation and hire the smart gentleman from pakistan

that way we both get a piece of the pie ! :thumb:

hmmmm ive opened my mouth a bit wide today ....better run and hide ! :namaste:

You Pakis are bragging about this, really ?
It's a ----ing RC 6DoF "Robot" (ahh, this word is easily the most loosely used one) and it took him ----ing 3 years to design this, that too he's a Masters student. No one gives a shit about RC "Robots" now days, nothing impressive.
