There are various kinds of jobs in intel agencies generally speaking.

from low level informer to action oriented jobs as shown in movies.

Who told you that? Informers and "foot soldiers" are dispensable assets and are not actually "employed" in most of the cases. An intel guy never reveals his/her assets to his boss. The "official" guys are protected by "diplomatic passport" when serving in hostile countries. Please do not believe in what those retire Intel guys claim or tell, many of them are shamelessly boastful.

@DingDong

Know somebody in intel. He does not reveals anything, almost ever, but when he was young he did bring in a pic taken after an encounter. We also do not ask him anything but then for obvious reasons, we have discussed about the risks. Cannot say much but it may actually be more exciting and dangerous then the movie at times. However there are long spells of near no-useful-deployments also - desk job analyst roles. Seems like people are allowed to be very multi-tasking within a chosen theater. They keep returning to those theaters each time better equipped.

Facilities and equipment seem reasonable but the self protection armament is completely inadequate. Only real protection is anonymity and FUD. But the loneliness could be difficult and equally difficult could be the need to protect unknown/unloved (probably even hated) informers. Seems like Indian intel has saved Musharaff also and that too multiple times - exactly that hateful. Then it seems there may be difficulty in the command structure too. Higher ups in the hierarchy it seems are neither as free to take the rap for the failures nor too willing. Reporting and secrecy is prime so failures get no bravery medals.

Informers definitely are in the worst possible position. Intel guy second worst. COIN guys third worst.

Not RAW. But a family friend used to work for IB. Tough guy. Gave up as little info as possible. It seems they are given some post in the district collector's office. That serves as their cover. Whenever any politician addresses a rally, IB men will be present in the crowd. All intelligence agencies have an unofficial policy of not recruiting muslims. Thats it. He passed away last year due to natural causes.
