Russia concludes third stage of Nerpa sub trials in Far East IDRW.ORG

Russia’s Nerpa nuclear attack submarine, damaged in a fatal accident during tests in November last year, successfully completed the third stage of sea trials, the governor of the Khabarovsk Territory said on Wednesday.”The submarine is in a good state of readiness and there is confidence that it will be commissioned on time,” Vyacheslav Shport said. The vessel resumed sea trials on July 10 in the Sea of Japan following extensive repairs. On November 8, 2008, while the Nerpa was undergoing sea trials, its onboard fire suppression system activated, releasing a deadly gas into the sleeping quarters. Three crew members and 17 shipyard workers were killed. There were 208 people, 81 of them submariners, onboard the vessel at the time.Following the repairs, which cost an estimated 1.9 billion rubles ($60 million), the submarine was cleared for final sea trials before being commissioned with the Russian Navy, and will be leased to the Indian Navy by the end of 2009 under the name INS Chakra.India reportedly paid $650 million for a 10-year lease of the 12,000-ton K-152 Nerpa, an Akula II class nuclear-powered attack submarine.Akula II class vessels are considered the quietest and deadliest of all Russian nuclear-powered attack submarines.

When we get this Akula submarine, trust me it will make a difference for the Indian Navy short and long term. The Chinese, Pakistanis, and Americans can make fun of the Russian sub or call it whatever they want, but the Akula is no joke and the countries in our neighborhood and even beyond know it means business.

And even getting 1 is more then enough for now. But the even better news is this is the beginning and we will get more subs and help from our friends Russia.

Americans never make fun of Russian submarines....Chinese can never make fun as they are their main consultants. Akula II is one of the best down there..

Well I was talking about when the accident happened about the fire suppression system that went off on the submarine and killed some Russian crew. Some people were saying it's unreliable and stuff like that. But accidents happen and may the people that died rest in peace.

Any idea on which Sub it is?????? Can it be the nuke sub which Russia is leasing? I dont think any other sub is there undergoing trials, unless the kilos are being refurbished again or something and tested.

Repairs of India-bound Russian sub hit by lack of funds: report

Repairs to an ill-fated Russian nuclear submarine that is due to be leased to India have been hampered as the shipyard has not been paid for its work, its chief said Thursday.

The Nerpa attack submarine, on which 20 people were killed in an accident last year, "returned to its base after successful tests where it should be subject to more in-dock work and then state tests, but there are problems," said Nikolai Povzyk, head of the Vostok shipyard which makes the submarine.

"The Vostok's electrical supply is currently cut off for debts, and we never got the money for the work we have done," Ria-Novosti news agency quoted Povzyk as saying.

The shipyard was due to be paid 1.9 billion rubles (63.8 million dollars) for repairing the submarine after last year's accident but has not yet been paid, he said.

The Nerpa was undergoing trials in the Sea of Japan last November when the submarine's fire-fighting system accidently went off, filling it with a toxic gas that killed 20 people on board and injuring another 20, in the latest in a string of tragedies to hit Russia's submarine fleet in recent years.

State media said at the time that the Nerpa was to be delivered to India, under a deal in which New Delhi would pay Moscow two billion dollars for two submarines with an option to buy them when the lease runs out.

news.outlookindia.com | India's Nuclear Subs Delivery Could be Delayed

The delivery of Akula-II class Nerpa nuclear submarine to the Indian Navy could be further delayed as repairs on the underwater vessel have been hit by a crash-crunch faced by the Russian shipyard.

Although the pre-delivery factory trials have been successfully completed after last November's mishap claiming 20 lives of technical staff and crew members, the shipyard has its power supply cut for non-payment of electricity bills, hampering the work on Nerpa, General Director of Amur Shipyard Nikolai Povzy said today.

"The preparations for pre-commissioning state trials are underway in complex financial conditions. The "Vostok" plant of Amur Shipyard has not got the money spent on the repairs of the submarine after last year's accident and from today the power has been cut," Povzyk was quoted as saying by RIA Novosti.

Russia was to deliver the Nerpa nuclear attack submarine to the Indian Navy on 10-year lease in June-July, however, it was delayed after accidental release of toxic Freon gas from the fire suppression system on November 8 last year during trials in the Sea of Japan.

Later in May Prime Minister Vladimir Putin personally visited Komsomolsk-on-Amur in the country's Far East and ordered to complete necessary trials and deliver the submarine to India by the end of the year.

Earlier reports say that the Indian naval personnel would also take part in the final trials with the Russian navy, which is to formally commission Nerpa prior to its lease to India as INS Chakra.

According to local experts further delay in Nerpa could hit the programme of operationalising the indigenous INS Arihant nuclear submarine, which is based on the same Akula-II blueprints.

Final trials of Russia’s Nerpa sub threatened by lack of funds

BY : NOVOSTI

Preparations for the final trials of Russia’s Nerpa nuclear attack submarine before it is commissioned with the Navy could be hit by financial problems, the head of the Amur shipyard said on Thursday.
The Nerpa, which was damaged in a fatal accident during tests in November last year, has been docked at the Amur shipyard’s Vostok repair facility in the town of Bolshoy Kamen in Primorye Territory since the end of new sea trials following repairs.
“The sea trials under the shipyard’s supervision have been completed on time. The submarine returned to its current base for preparation for final tests, but we have run into some problems,” said Nikolai Povzyk, the Amur shipyard general director.
“We have not yet received payments for work that has been already done, and today the electricity supply to the Vostok facility was cut [by a local electricity supplier] because we have not been able to pay our debts,” the official said.
The shipyard was promised an estimated 1.9 billion rubles ($60 million) in government funds in the beginning of October to cover the cost of the repairs.
On November 8, 2008, while the Nerpa was undergoing sea trials, its onboard fire extinguishing system went off, releasing a deadly gas into the sleeping quarters. Three crewmembers and 17 shipyard workers were killed. There were 208 people, 81 of them submariners, aboard the vessel at the time.
After induction into the Russian Navy, the Nerpa is expected to be leased to the Indian Navy by the end of 2009 under the name INS Chakra.
India reportedly paid $650 million for a 10-year lease of the 12,000-ton K-152 Nerpa, an Akula II class nuclear-powered attack submarine.

No. Some Russian shipyard official said that Russia must not hand over the second sub to India since it is not being inducted in the Indian Navy based on "objectives." According to him, IN wants it only for prestige.

We will be getting 2 subs.
