Russia may not answer missile defense with Iskanders

LONDON, April 2 (RIA Novosti) - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Thursday there is a good chance Russia will not have to place Iskander missiles in the Kaliningrad Region in response to the U.S. missile shield in Europe.

"We had a talk on this issue with the U.S. president. At a minimum I can say that today the U.S. has a desire to listen to our argument. They are not trying to cut off [talks] and say that the decision has already been made," Medvedev said in a speech at the London School of Economics.

Russia has consistently opposed the missile shield as a threat to its national security and the president said last November that it would deploy Iskander-M missiles in the country's westernmost exclave of Kaliningrad, which borders NATO members Poland and Lithuania, if the shield was put into operation.

Medvedev said that financing the missile defense system in its present form would be "a mistake" that would remain on the Bush administration's conscience, adding that both countries would make every effort "to find a way out of this difficult situation."

Washington has agreed with Warsaw and Prague on plans to deploy 10 interceptor missiles in Poland and a radar in the Czech Republic by 2013. The United States says the defenses are needed to deter possible strikes from "rogue states" such as Iran.

Top Russian officials have repeatedly expressed their hope that President Obama will not follow through with the missile defense plans of his predecessor, George W. Bush.

This above all shows the difference between George Bush and Obama and in a lot of ways shows the end of an era as far as the politics of the world go. No longer can American just bully around people and expect everyone to fall in line and agree with everything they say. It is good to see that the Russians and the Americans can come to an agreement of sorts. Then again I never really understood why Russia was so against the missile shield. It is not like NATO was getting ready to strike at Russia....they have enough problems on their hands as it is.

The KS-172 may have been based on the airframe of the 9K37M1 Buk-M surface-to-air missile. It used a two-stage rocket engine with a flight speed of about Mach 4 and a claimed maximum range of 400 km (250 mi). The AAM-L flies to the vicinity of the target by inertial navigation, then activates its own active radar for terminal homing.

The AAM-L missile is intended for use against Airborne Early Warning, tanker, and maritime patrol aircraft, giving an air force the ability to attack these vital assets without having to engage their fighter escorts. Enhanced-range versions have also been suggested as possible anti-satellite weapons.

- An Active Homing Radar Seeker with a Wide Lock-On Range Which is able to recieve targeting data from the launch AC.

- Design a combined Gas/AeroDynamic Control system with 3d TVC . Provides High Manoeuvrability irrespective of launch Conditions and allows for missle launch with AC in super Manoeuvrability flight mode.

- Create and Adaptive Rapid Reaction Autopilot Which Optimises with Missile Stabilization and control Parameters within the firing range.

- Development of Special Interaction Logic btween the KS-172 Explosive Fuse and Guidance system Which ( In addition to structural and config features) gurantees absolute immunity of the Warhead detonation system to Jamming

Most probably will carry 5. 2 under each wing tip and 1 under fuselage or will carry 3.

Also supersonic speed burns more fuel , needs more robust airframe which will increase the weight and size of the missile.

Not necessarily. The Brahmos air to surface version already weighs 2.5 tons and can traverse a distance of 300km. The KS-172 weighs less than 1ton. It carries a special seeker and a proximity fuze.

Brahmos has a land attack seeker and a very big warhead. It will be overkill for the AWACS. A missile which punches holes in ships is a bit too much for an AWACS.

Also, the Brahmos aerodynamics is not good enough for Air to air roles. The missile needs to be sleek in order to pull a lot of Gs at much higher speeds than Brahmos in order to kill a target maneuvering at its max, 12G.

2 different missiles, 2 different roles. Simple as that.

MTCR is applicable for only Surface to Surface and A2G missiles. There is no MTCR regulations for A2A. The full MTCR text is posted in the Articles section by me.

Brahmos comes under the gamut of MTCR. It cannot be modified for other roles because a modification on one role will affect the modification on other roles too.

P2P...Brahmos wont be kept as Brahmos it will be named something else mate. LACM brahmos is totally different from AShCM brahmos...only the airframe and engine are the same. The software is totally different mate.
