Crazy figures if true. But that would mean it has nothing to do with agriculture.
Because agriculture income is tax free, black money is shown as agriculture income. I doubt most of the big bollywood stars buy farm house at Alibaugh for growing rice or poultry farming. People must be remembering the scandal few years back when Amitabh bacchan was accused of using fake certificate as son of a farmer to buy farm land in some remote village in maharashtra.

Nearly all of it gets sold. Government buys it and then let it rot to hell.

Problem is that a significant chunk of these "farmers" are not actually farmers. They are land owners from different financial and professional backgrounds like government officials, politicians, businessmem or just random middle class folks who offer their farm lands on lease to landless farmers in lieu of either fixed amount or as a profit percentage.

This allows them to claim government benefits at the same time convert their illicit earnings as completely legal farm income since there is no way to ascertain the income. To oversimplify, a businessman can say that he has earned xyz percentage of his income of from his farms and therefore it is not taxable.
If you could get the 50m tonnes of spoiled produce exported it would dwarf whatever number that is.

Out of the 150 million tonnes of produce India produces annually, 50 million of it spoils. I think that is a bigger problem than worrying about taxing the farmers whose products don't get sold.
Millions of tons of wheat are rotting because India ran out of warehouse space to hold another bumper crop. Meanwhile hunger and malnourishment are still problems in the populous nation. What an irony!

Meanwhile.........

It's know as essential waste it spoils every year. Many million tones goes into reserves every year which is not to be touched unless until there is supply breakdown or some emergency situation.

This is a great thread.....I want more great discussion in this sector ...

This system seems exploit by rich section , just like caste system
There are 3 layers of farmers , one who have own land other who own leased land and 3rd one who have nothing , they are mostly labour who get some % of income .They too brand themselves as farmer.

Rich farmers mostly get the benefit of loan waiver and tax exemption on agri product ,they have power to save many labor farmer in bad season ...but instead of doing that they misguide them for loan waiver type shit , it ultimately bring more benefit to top tire land owing families as they hold many out of book income and one of the safest way to turn black money into white.

Another think that one poster here pointout that many farmers goes for cotton type crops which if fail bring devastating effect on farmer s, in my villege ppl mostly concentrate of rice/whete and jute during rainy season after rice ...these crops are't in that sense "money crops" , but u can store them in personal small stores( which was normal in every farmer family) and use them all the year around ...these stores and better than many govt stores , created in millennium old traditional techniques. It's one of the reason that in Bengal not much farmer die in hunger or commit suicide .
