Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS)-AHMEDABAD:

The popularity quotient of Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) is scaling new heights. During its initial days, the BRTS carried only 17,000 passengers per day. In just about a year, the number of passengers on a single day is now hovering around one lakh passengers. On average over 97,000 passengers commute daily using the BRTS.

Apart from the rise in the number of passengers, the income of BRTS too has gone up, nearing the Rs 6 lakh-mark per day. Officials said after the extension of the 5.5 km stretch from Soni-ni-Chawl to Naroda crossroads, the income has gone up by over one lakh per day while the number of passenger has increased by around 15,000 per day to touch around 97,000-mark.

The passengers opting for long routes on BRTS are also on the rise, said civic officials. Citing an example, the official said that on Monday 94,771 passengers used the BRTS and the income was Rs 5,94,485. Similarly, on Tuesday, the number of passengers was 97,155 and the income was only Rs 5,72,368. "The number of passengers and the income generated is an indication that more people went in for long distance travels," said BRTS sources.

Officials said that before extending the corridor from Soni-ni-Chawl to Naroda, it used to carry around 82,000 passengers on an average per day and the income was around Rs 4.80 lakh per day.

The BRTS was launched on October 14, 2009. In the first month, the average passenger load was 17,300 per day, while the income was Rs 81,000. But as the corporation began expanding the network, the passenger load kept increasing.

Officials said the BRTS is taking serious note of the survey that there was a need for proper maintenance of bus stops and the regular cleaning was necessary and has invited tenders for cleaning bus stops.

State to get its first automated road

MUMBAI: Maharashtra will have its first ever automated road test track by April. It is being built by the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) to test the skills of 40,000 drivers employed with the corporation. Similar tracks are being planned at RTO offices which could come up in the near future, to enable those applying for new licences take a test without the support of a traffic inspector.

"An automated test track is controlled completely by a computer and there is no human intervention," said MSRTC managing director Deepak Kapoor. He further said that the corporation has acquired four acres on Pune-Nashik road on which 60% construction work for the automated track is over. The entire track will be ready by April end.

"It will test the driving skills in four computerized phases," he said. A driver will have to register his name and other details on a machine following which a voice-activated system will guide him while he takes control of the wheel. He said the computer will provide an error-free report while in a normal road test, one cannot rule out possibility of human errors on part of the inspector. The software for the computers will be ready by this month.
