Successful Direct Hit by Interceptor Missile

Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) System of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully scored a direct hit on incoming missile today at around 09:45 am from Dr Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha. The interceptor directly hit the target at an altitude of about 15 kilometre and destroyed it into fragments. The spectacular success puts India in the league of a very few select nations world over in the arena of critical defence technology.

Today’s direct interception is fourth in a row, where the missiles have scored a perfect hit on the incoming missile.

In text book style launch, the incoming ballistic missile was launched from LC-III complex of ITR, which followed the exact path of intended ballistic missile. Radars located at different stations far-off, acquired the target, tracked them and passed on to the Master Control Centre (MCC), which generated the expected trajectory of the target and alerted the interceptor missile. The interceptor was launched from Dr A P J Abdul Kalam Island at appropriate time for interception, which was initially guided by the Inertial Navigational System and the radars. Later, the seeker took over after a proper lock on to the target and guided the missile towards the target. All the radars, Electro Optical and Telemetry Stations tracked both the missiles and recorded the final interception.

The event was witnessed by Vice Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Sirish Deo and other senior officials of Armed Forces. Directors of DRDO laboratories namely RCI, ASL, LRDE and ITR reviewed the entire launch operations.

Scientific Advisor to Raksha Mantri & Director General (Missiles & Strategic Systems) Dr G Sateesh Reddy was present during the launch operation said that the repeat performance of the interception demonstrates the country’s professional capability in high technology oriented Ballistic Missile Defence.

Chairman DRDO & Secretary Department of Defence Research & Development Dr S Christopher, congratulated the scientists behind the magnificent feat and said that the test paved the way for self-reliance.

Raksha Mantri Smt Nirmala Sitharaman congratulated DRDO for elevating the country to few select nations having such BMD capability.

India on Thursday successfully test-fired its indigenously developed Advanced Air Defence (AAD) supersonic interceptor missile, capable of destroying any incoming ballistic missile in low altitude, from a test range in Odisha.


This was the third supersonic interceptor test carried out this year in which an incoming ballistic missile target was successfully intercepted, within 30 km altitude of the earth’s atmosphere by an interceptor.

“It was a direct hit and grand success,” Defence sources said after the test launch.

The earlier two tests were conducted on March 1 and February 11, 2017, as part of efforts to have a full-fledged multi-layer Ballistic Missile Defence system.


“Today’s test was conducted to validate various parameters of the interceptor in flight mode and it was all success,” the sources said.

The target missile—a Prithvi missile—was launched from launch complex 3 of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur near here.

After getting signals by tracking radars, the interceptor AAD missile, positioned at Abdul Kalam Island—previously known as Wheeler Island—in the Bay of Bengal, roared through its trajectory to destroy the hostile target missile in mid-air in an endo-atmospheric altitude, defence sources said.

The interceptor is a 7.5-meter long single stage solid rocket propelled guided missile equipped with a navigation system, a hi-tech computer and an electro-mechanical activator, the sources said.

The state-of-the-art interceptor missile has its own mobile launcher, secure data link for interception, independent tracking and homing capabilities and sophisticated radars. PTI

India on Thursday successfully test-fired an Advanced Air Defence (AAD) interceptor missile, capable of destroying enemy ballistic missiles at low altitude, from a test range in Odisha.

The missile is being developed as part the Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) system and it was the third successful test this year.

The endo-atmospheric interceptor made a direct hit with the incoming missile at an altitude of 15 km, completely destroying it. This version has been tested several times, proving its reliability,” a defence official said.

The official stated that shooting down an incoming missile at lower altitudes is more complicated than shooting at higher altitudes due to the higher velocity of the missile.

“The missile is at the terminal stage of its flight and is at maximum velocity. The endo-atmospheric missile is capable of intercepting missiles at altitudes of 15-30 km,” he said.

The test was carried out from Abdul Kalam Island off the Odisha coast in response to an incoming ‘enemy’ missile which was fired from launch complex 3 of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur.

The BMD consists of two interceptor missiles, the Prithvi Defence Vehicle (PDV) for exo-atmospheric ranges and the Advanced Area Defence (AAD) missile for endo-atmosphere or lower altitudes.

India new tender to replace L-70 and ZU-23-2 air defense guns


India launched a $1.5 billion limited tender in the last week of December for the acquisition of new-generation close-in weapons systems (CIWS) to provide a replacement for its aging Swedish Bofors L-70 and Russian-legacy ZU-23-2B air-defense guns. The tender issued is restricted to domestic Indian firms only under the "Buy and Make (Indian)" procurement category.

The aim is to procure 244 air-defense guns along with 228 fire-control/search radars and 204,000 programmable bullets under what is the first air-defense program issued to Indian companies for domestic manufacture. Each unit will be short-range, with the guns having a range of 3.5 kilometers and a capability of firing 200 rounds of ammunition per minute. E

Each CIWS unit will be used to target enemy aircraft, helicopters, drones and cruise missiles. The goal is to bring the new CIWS units into IAF service within seven years and integrate them with air command-and-control systems used for air traffic and surveillance management purposes.

Domestic companies expected to bid on the tender include Bharat Forge Limited, Punj Lloyd, Tata Power SED, Larsen & Toubro, Reliance Defense, and Mahindra Defense Systems, plus state-run Bharat Electronics Ltd and the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB).

The L/70 is an anti-aircraft gun 40mm caliber designed and manufactured by the Swedish Company Bofors which is now part of BAE Systems. The Bofors L/70 40mm is intended for engaging high speed air-craft flying at low altitude, its chief characteristics being high speeds of elevation and traverse combined with a high rate of fire. The gun is normally fired electrically from remote control. It can also be fired electrically from the gun position by means of the Bofors local power control. In case power supply fails, the gun can be operated purely mechanically from the mounting.

The Bofors L/70 40mm uses a single-barrel 40mm caliber. The rounds are loaded in 4 round clips, although most systems are fitted with a 26 round hopper. The cyclic rate of fire is 240 rpm and upgrade packages offer 300 rpm. The maximum effective range is 3 to 4 km. The Bofors L/70 40mm can fire a full range of ammunitions as the PFHE Mk2, HCHE, HE-T, APC-T, and P-T.

The ZU-23-2, also known as ZU-23, is a russian made towed 23 mm anti-aircraft twin-barreled automatic cannon. The latest upgraded version of this anti-aircraft gun system is fitted with new Electro Optical Firing System gives the gun the capability to engage aeral targets in day and night conditions. The ZU-23-2B is fitted with day and night camera, laser range finder and digital fire control computer.

We have the guns for navy - license produced by BHEL.
The gun can fire 20Km and (5 Km attitude) - 120 rounds per minute.

If I am not wrong Army considered Greek Artamis 30 locally produced in India. Speaking of neighbors Pak army has successfully inducted new 35mm Oerlikon AA or it's Chinese copy

We can replace old anti aircraft guns with pantsir-S1 or S-2 to protect airbases from cruise missiles,drone attacks and especially glide bombs.

Looks for performance enhancement of indigenously developed system

The Army is fully satisfied with the performance of the indigenously developed Akash short-range surface-to-air missile (SR SAM) system and is looking for further performance enhancements in future, Lt. Gen. Parminder Singh S Jaggi, Director-General, Army Air Defence (AAD), said here on Tuesday.

Last month, the Army carried out the first user trial of the missile system.

Biggest advantage

“We are happy with the Akash system. It is a watershed as far as indigenous systems are concerned. The biggest advantage is it is a home grown system,” Lt. Gen. Jaggi said.

The Army’s AAD celebrated its 25th year of raising on Tuesday.

The Army currently has two Akash regiments which it began inducting in 2015. Last year, the Defence Ministry cancelled a global tender for additional SR SAMs and approved procurement of two more regiments. Each regiment consists of six launchers with each launcher having three missiles. Officials say Akash has an indigenous content of 96%.

“The first user trial by AAD crew was fully successful. Akash has been validated as it has been conceptualised,” Lt. Gen. Jaggi said.

25-km range
Akash has a range of 25 km and can simultaneously engage multiple targets in all weather conditions and has a large operational envelope from a low altitude of 30 metres to a maximum of up to 20 km.

The Army is likely to order more Akash regiments as it is in the process of replacing its legacy systems in service.

Lt. Gen. Jaggi said as more regiments were ordered, there would be additional enhancements in the system as well in performance.

He noted that as AAD celebrated its silver jubilee, there had beeb a major modernisation drive under way with the induction of a medium-range surface-to-air missile for which contracts had been signed and other deals in progress.

Akash was developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) as part of the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme initiated in 1984 and is manufactured by Bharat Dynamics Ltd. (BDL).

Raksha Mantri Visits Belcomplex Bangalore

Raksha Mantri Smt Nirmala Sitharaman made her maiden visit to the Bangalore Complex of Navratna Defence PSU Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) today and had a first-hand glimpse of the facilities. Smt Sitharaman also had detailed discussions with the BEL management on both ongoing and futuristic projects of the defence major.

The RM was given a corporate overview covering the business profile, infrastructure and manufacturing and testing facilities, manpower, Research & Development and Quality initiatives, and business performance of BEL.

She visited the outdoor test facility of Military Radar and Missile Systems Strategic Business Units. She appreciated the dedication and hard work put in by the women employees of BEL involved in the Akash Missile project and other radar projects. Smt Sitharaman also visited the new Near Field Test facility, Microwave Supercomponents and Coastal Surveillance System facilities at BEL-Bangalore and appreciated the work done by BEL in defence electronics.

Army Air Defence Corps Celebrates Its 25th Raising Day

25th Raising Day of Army Air Defence was celebrated on 10th January 2018. On the occasion, Lt Gen Ashwani Kumar, Adjutant General & Senior Colonel Commandant AAD along with Lt Gen P S Jaggi and veterans laid the wreaths and paid homage to the braves in a solemn ceremony organised at the ‘Amar Jawan Jyoti’. On this day, all ranks of Army Air Defence, rededicated themselves selflessly towards the service of the Nation and their motto, AKASHE SHATRUN JAHI’.

The Corps of Army Air Defence was raised on 10 Jan 1994 and since then has grown in stature and has proved its mettle in all major conflicts of the past. The Corps is now going through a transformative period of modernization with induction of new weapon systems and upgradation of existing weapon systems. The raising of the Akash Regiments and planned induction of MRSAM have been game changers in Battle of Skies providing the ground forces with more freedom, maneuverability and security. In the next few years, Army Air Defence Corps will transform into a technologically advanced combat force.

Any pics of GS 100 RADAR in Indian service ? Was to be made by BEL Thales JV.
And did elta deliver all 15 MPR to IAF?

And any idea which bases got Akash except for lohegaon Gwalior Jamnagar Tezpur.
Long time since that IMINT analysis :p So planning to try my own OSINT.
Suggestions are valued.

Green Circles: THD-1955 (Kept range as 300 km only)
Deployed in Punjab, Gujrat, Rajasthan Delhi, Bangalore, West Bengal, Jharkhand(A bit doubtful.)

Red Circles: MPR like Elta-2084 and Arudhra (Kept 200 km range except for one in Gujrat which is confirmed Arudhra)

In NE, Purples are highly probable Akash systems with Rohini Radars. (100 km range)

Also spotted 2 Aerostat locations. 1 was known since IMINT analysis.
The two Green Trees are BMD radars. based in orissa and bangalore
