This New Russian Sniper Rifle Is Redefining 'a Safe Distance'

A new report warns that a new new Russian sniper could change the shape of future battlefields.

Common Russian battle tactics, currently on display in Ukraine and elsewhere, uses three rows of snipers in battle. Although the first two rows present a challenge for even the best marksmen, it’s the back row—which can be around 2,000 yards away from a target—where Russia places its most elite. Now a U.S. Army report says that this last row of warriors have become even more deadly, thanks to a new weapon—the T-5000 Tochnost rifle.

The report, called the “Russian New Generation Warfare Handbook,” warns that Russian snipers are “far more advanced than the precision shooters U.S. formations have encountered over the last 15 years” and can’t be thwarted by usual anti-sniper tactics of locating and pinning down the sniper. To be put simply, the Army is being outgunned.

Before the T-5000, Russia used the Dragunov, a good quality rifle but with poor optics. Where the American McMillian TAC-338 could hit a target at 1,700 yards, the Dragunov maxed out at just 800 yards.

The T-5000 doesn’t share those limitations. Using the .388 Lapua Magnum ammo, replacing the Dragunov’s old ammo that’s been around since Imperial Russia, the rifle delivers 5,000 foot-pounds of energy. A familiar round used by the Army, it delivers twice the amount of energy as the rifle that came before it.

ORuzejnyje SIStemy (ORSIS), the Moscow-based designers of the rifle, started production in 2011. The company benefits from expertise from Russia’s hardcore National Federation of High-Precision Shooting and has shown uses the most advanced technology available in the world. ORSIS claims to have unique tools and equipment, including machine tools which can carve metal into very precise shapes, digitally-controlled ovens, a cryogenic chamber, and “the only cutter-grinding machine in Russia with a video measuring system.”

The T-5000 is made with metals from Germany, Austria, and the U.S., and The Firearm Blog, which isn’t always polite about Russian-made guns, applauds the rifle’s build quality.

Better materials, better ammo, and better optics means a sniper that’s vastly more accurate and can put a bullet inside a one-inch circle firing from 200 yards. This “0.5 minutes of arc” means the T-5000 remains deadly accurate at 2,000 yards, which is likely why it’s also becoming a favorite at international shooting competitions.

Marco Vorobiev, former member of an Soviet Spetsnaz special forces unit, now a firearms and tactics instructor and author, describes the T-5000 as a gun “that can compete with any custom-built bolt action precision rifle out there...It is well designed and built in small batches. More of a custom rifle than mass produced.”

And those small numbers have appeared in conflict zones around the world, including Iraq and Ukraine. It’s now being bought up by Russian regular army and the Federal Security Service (the old KGB), the Federal Protective Service (like the U.S. Secret Service), and the National Guard. Deliveries were originally due in 2020 but have been brought forward, with some units receiving their rifles this year.

For now, the solution is simple—run.

In an era of 122mm rocket launchers and drone strikes, being pinned down by a sniper may not seem like a big deal. But on the battlefield, it can mean a unit being annihilated by a rocket strike within minutes. As described in the “Russian New Generation Warfare Handbook,” teams of snipers pinned down opposing forces, and when immobilized, were then attacked from multiple rocket launchers.

For now, the solution is simple—run. The report advises breaking contact immediately when a unit is engaged by a modern Russian sniper. Any hesitation will mean more casualties, either from sniper fire or from artillery. This disadvantage of this tactic is that “any enemy marksman in an established position will create a minimum of two casualties per engagement with little to no repercussions.”

The report also says the Army needs improved tactics to handle the new threat. These new ideas could include smoke grenades, issuing troops with special weapons, or relying on portable tactical drones like the Switchblade to find and attack snipers.

But the T-5000 is really only beginning, even more powerful snipers are currently in the works. Lobaev Arms, claimed a world record with a Sumrak (Twilight) rifle, hitting a target from 3,720 yards away in 2015. Last month, the company topped this with a 4,600 yard shot. Although requiring detailed knowledge of the exact winds as well as a correction for the rotation of the Earth, these snipers will redefine the idea of “a safe distance” and become new masters of the battlefield.

The SVD Dragunov was the Soviet marksman's rifle that finally replaced the failed attempt to issue the SVT-40 as a precision rifle. It was introduced in 1963, after about 5 years of development, and its scarcity in the United States has led to the development of a loyal and dedicated group of admirers. This, of course, has led to much spirited debate about the relative merits of the different variations of the SVD which have been imported into the US. Today, we will look at three in detail: a genuine Soviet military-issue SVD, a commercial Tiger SVD made in Russia, and a commercial Chinese NDM-86 in 7.62 NATO caliber (a commercial version of the Chinese Type 79/85 military rifle). While these rifles really have negligible differences in actual shooting and handling performance, they do differ in some details. Specifically: - firing pin - gas regulator - trigger mechanism (safety sear & disconnector) - bolt machining - mainspring and top cover - receiver lightening cut(s) Enjoy the video, and see the differences for yourself!

The best anti material rifle and sometime used as sniper rifle. It is being used in LOC. No wonder that Pakistani sniper have gone in hiding.

It has twin in Vdhawansak in India. Same capability and same reliability.

Is there any major war where anti material rifles were used as snipers(concealed)? As far as I know, Vidhwansak weighs 30kg with magazine. I am wondering how such rifle can be used as concealed sniper.

As a anti material rifle tiring at 2,000 yards, you do not have to conceal much, yet it is get for soldiers to stay hidden and quietly escape.

As sniper rifle, two man team will carry it to its firing location. Magazine weight and the barrel weight in the smaller round comes down quickly to manageable.

What is a manageable weight?

If you ask the opponent who is hell bent on rejecting local Vidhawansak, the manageable weight is low although on a long march a soldier does carry close 40 pound plus his rifle and ammunition.

A proponent will argue to distribute the weight between two man team.

Indian army prefers to buy everything abroad and stick the bill to the tax payer.

Army always wins the argument, that is why the Army is looking for a sniper rifle with plastic stock and Titanium made $30,000 sniper rifle. Add to that $800 telescope for proper sighting. It is the tax payer who are going to pay the bills, the Army does not care.

If the politicians in MOD insist on local Vidhwansak, they will test the hell out of it until it fails. Then they will reject it.

The army doesn't call the shots. Government does.

Vidhwansak is anti material rifle. Sniper is something like Dragunov or the recent Tiruchirapalli sniper.

One must not confuse the two

For folks who want to know more about the details of long range shooting, this youtube playlist has comprehensive videos on both the subjects of shooting techniques, and the various factors that affect the shooting, like static/dynamic stability, barrel twist, magnus effect, coriolis effect.

Nothing super technical, but enough to give an idea of the basics.

NSG enhances sniping capabilities of its commandos

NEW DELHI: Elite counter-terror force NSG has bolstered its sniping capabilities so that it can effectively tackle terrorists and other emerging threats to national security, the force's chief said on Tuesday.

The 'black cat' commando force has procured new sniper weapons and trained more sharp-shooters in the skill in the recent past and is increasingly using them for special operations, NSG Director General S P Singh said.

"The skill of sniping is a big asset for a commando force like us. We have put a greater stress on this domain," Singh told PTI.

The National Security Guard (NSG), he said, has also procured advanced sniping weapons and has trained more personnel for special tasks.

The NSG DG, however, did not quantify the number of NSG commandos trained in the skill.

Official sources said while snipers were essentially part of NSG assault teams in operations, their numbers were now being increased and used more frequently.

"So, the next time a counter-terror team is making an intervention where a terrorist is holed up, the snipers would not only give them a good cover but also help in neutralising the target in better time," a senior officer said.

PTI, in February last year, had reported that the force, has upgraded its sniper rifles and inducted the German PSG1 A1, which carries an enhanced number of 20 rounds to engage and pin down targets for a longer time and is complemented with longer range and extreme accuracy.

The 7.2kg rifle with telescopic sight is an upgrade of the PSG1 sniper variant being used by the marksmen of the NSG till recently.

The sniping discipline has also been included for the first time in the 8th All India Police Commando Competition, being hosted by the NSG this time.

The competition, involving 25 teams from various state police and paramilitary forces, will begin this weekend at the NSG garrison in Manesar near here.

The DG said the NSG desires that all the security forces of the country have "synergy and inter-operability" when it comes to tackling terror threats and attacks.

Singh said the force is "all prepared" to tackle any situation in the run up to the upcoming Republic Day celebrations on January 26.

The NSG was raised in 1986 as the federal contingency force of commandos to counter any variant of terror or hijack threat.

Not quite true. Some of the best shots taken in battle have been from what you would qualify as Anti Material Rifles. The 2 longest kills on record were made with the McMilan TAC-50 (3540m) and the L-115A3 (2475m).

The TAC-50 fires the 12.7x99 round, while the AW L115A3 fires the .338 Lapua Magnum. Both are antimaterial rounds and yet exhibit the best long distance characteristics. Thus, Anti Material Rifles are literally, the best sniper rifles.

WWII is one major example. Especially the Eastern Front and in occupied Poland and Yugoslavia. Partisans would use these weapons to attack German convoys and half tracks. Very very intimidating weapon.

Materiel and Material are different words.

materiel
məˌtɪərɪˈɛl/
noun
  1. military materials and equipment.

Then, 0.338 inch or 8.6mm diameter bullets don't have enough volume for API or AP-T payloads necessary for anti materiel work, rather .338 lapua magnum was developed from the start as a very long range sniper round. The history is not exactly linear, more info is available here.

We need to replace designated marksmen cartridge 7.62x51 or 54 with 30.06 Springfield,it had better range and muzzle energy.
For precision sniping 338,408 cheytac ,416 barrett and .50 bmg.

Just curious, this is seventh time the Pakistani snipers have shot an Indian soldier on Patrol.

What is the counter sniping weapon to shoot the sniper first.
