Vande Bharat Express may get sleeper coaches; new trains may be called T-20

LUCKNOW: The high-end and much-hyped train Vande Bharat Express might be introduced for other, longer routes with sleeper coaches.

Now, the train might also get sleeper coaches for comfort of passengers. The first train set, rolled out in 2018, hence also called Train-18, was flagged off between Varanasi and New Delhi in February 2019. It has only chair cars and covers about 700km in one direction.

The research wing of Indian Railways, Lucknow-based RDSO, has reworked the specifications of the train for the new routes which are yet to be decided.

In a sleeper coach, load is not distributed equally as one side has more berths. When a high-speed train like Vande Bharat runs at full speed, it might tilt to one side. The load, therefore, has to be equally distributed in the underframe of the coach. This is why coaches will have to be designed.
The railway ministry has already ordered Integral Coach Factory to produce at least 45 new rakes of Vande Bharat.

“The train set with sleeper coaches may be called T-20, as was planned by railways initially,” said a source. The speed of the new train would remain the same.

T-18 is an engine-less, self-propelled train that crossed the 180 kmph mark during a trial run. RDSO had recommended 160kmph as the operational speed. T-18 is Indian Railways’s second high-profile, made-in-India, super-fast train after Mahamana Express, which was flagged off in January 2016 between Delhi and Varanasi.

In Budget 2020, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had said that the Indian Railways is all set to introduce more private trains like the Tejas Express to connect tourist places. The Railways has recently proposed a mega plan to include private players in 100 routes across the country.

Indian Railways' maiden attempt to let private companies run trains received a warm welcome among global and local players. More than two dozen global firms including as Alstom Transport, Bombardier, Siemens AG, Hyundai Rotem Company and Macquarie have shown interest. Among home-grown companies, Tata Realty and Infrastructure, Hitachi India and South Asia, Essel Group, Adani Ports and SEZ, Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) are also in the race to run private trains in the country.

1) Indian Railways has prepared a list of 100 routes for the introduction of 150 private trains across India. The 100 routes have been split into 10-12 clusters.


2) Mumbai-New Delhi, Chennai to New Delhi, New Delhi to Howrah, Shalimar to Pune, New Delhi to Patna are some of the routes where the private trains will operate.

3) Private trains running on a particular route will have a head start of 15 minutes on other trains running on the same route. "No similar scheduled regular train will depart in the same origin destination route within 15 minutes of the scheduled operation of the concessionaires (private players) train," the document said.

4) Each new train shall have a minimum of 16 coaches. The maximum number of coaches shall not exceed the longest passenger train operating on the respective route. Passengers trains are allowed to run on a maximum speed of 160 kmph.


5) The private entity will have the last say on deciding the fare on a particular route. They shall be responsible for financing, procuring, operating and maintaining trains.

Focused on developing new infrastructure, Budget 2020 allocated ₹12,000 crore for construction of new railway lines, ₹2,250 crore for gauge conversion, ₹700 crore for doubling, ₹5,786.97 crore for rolling stock and ₹1,650 crore for signalling and telecom among others.

Delhi-Varanasi Vande Bharat Express Completes 1 Year Of Operations With 100 Per Cent Occupancy, Earns Rs 92 Crore
In a major success for the Indian Railways, the first ever Vande Bharat Express which was launched on 15 February last year between the capital city of New Delhi and Varanasi city in the State of Uttar Pradesh (UP) has registered a cumulative yearly earning of Rs 92.29 crore with cent per cent occupancy, reports Livemint.

Flagged off by Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi last year, the train had begun its commercial operations from 17 February and has since traversed over 3.8 lakh kilometers between the two cities.

The all air-conditioned train indigenously built in India, it covers the distance between the cities in just eight hours. It was built by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in a record time of just 18 months. These trains boast of a wide array of features, including automatic doors with sliding footsteps and onboard computers for train control and remote monitoring.
Since the launch, another such train has also begun to operate between New Delhi and Sri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra stations of the Indian Railways.

Similar system was introduced in Africa. Farmers started rearing reel bees along the border of their fields. That reduced elephants crossing into field's and also reduced human animal conflict. It also provided extra income for the farmers from the honey the bees make.

The system developed by N.F. Railway to keep wild elephants away from crossing the railway track by playing the amplified sound of buzzing of honey bees has won the best innovation award in Indian Railways for the year 2018-19. The 1st prize comprise of a citation along with a cash award of Rs. 3 lakhs.

Train 20 is supposed to enter the service this year.

Thanks god that now Indian Railway has started focusing on aerodynamics of the train. I remember any news long time ago that if train is shaped in particular manner, improvement in aerodynamics can save 3.5 crore rupees of electricity every year with increasing speed of the the train. A study was done bY IIT, but our lazy idiot people could do it for many years. I am very happy that same is is being done even partly now. if you see any high speed train of the Japan us France at etc. they all are aerodynamically shaped. Aerodynamics is very important in any vehicle moving at a high speed. it is even very important in cars and other vehicles. The must studiy Aerodynamic design at a speed of between somewhere around hundred to 200 km and shape the engines accordingly to save the electricity to and improve the Train speed.

I remember any news long time ago that if train is shaped in particular manner, improvement in aerodynamics can save 3.5 crore rupees of electricity every year with increasing speed of the the train. Train 20 will be a sleeper version of Train 18 for longer routes. A new design is not coming in my opinion.
ya but from the leaked image it looks like a new design.. front end appears to be more streamlined, possibly for higher speeds.. will have to wait till prototype rolls out

Are you referring Wap-5 aerodynamic design as Train -20?

Read somewhere T20 development was shelved due to design issues... New design was to be developed don't know what happened

2022 onwards MCF Raibareli will start manufacturing aluminium coaches capable of attaining speed upto 250kmph. South Korea will transfer the technology. Train 18 coaches are modified LHB coaches. Maybe we can see Train-20 after 2022 with these new coaches.

check d two pics i uploaded....engine does not have cabin 2 ....these one sided engine will.b used as push pull....
