Konkan Railways

The Konkan Railway was the missing link between India’s commercial capital, Mumbai, and Mangalore. The 760-kilometre line connects Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka States — a region of criss-crossing rivers, plunging valleys and mountains that soar into the clouds.

This is one of the toughest railway projects carried out by Indian Railways under the leadership of our very own Metro man E Sreedharan. This is one of the most profitable of all Indian Railways sister concerns.

The Beginning

Some Technical Specification

• Track - Gauge: Broad gauge (1676 mm)

• Route Length - 760 km

• No. of curves – 320

• Major Bridges - 179 (Lineal waterway 21.50 km)

• Minor Bridges - 1,819 (Lineal waterway 5.73 km)

• Total Quantity of Cement - 6,00,000 tonnes

• Total Quantity of Steel - 80,000 tonnes

• Total Quantity of Structural Steel - 2,00,000 tonnes

• Total Quantity of HTS - 3,160 tonnes (HTS – High Tensile Steel)

• Telecommunications - State of the art optic fibre with digital communication

• Longest Bridge - Across Sharavati river in Honnavar (2065.8 m)

Konkan Railways Continues

Now let’s check how much Konkan Railways is beneficial

First we will see how much Konkan Railways is saving in terms of distance

• Mangalore-Mumbai ------2,041km (road), 914km (rail) saves - 1,127km

• Mangalore-Ahmedabad ----- 2,653km (road), 1,358km (rail) saves -1,295km

• Mangalore-Delhi ----- 3,033km (road), 2,249km (rail) saves – 784km

• Cochin-Mumbai ----- 1,849km (road), 1,336 (rail) saves – 513km

Now let’s check saving in travel time in terms of hours

(Note: These savings in travel time are based on a maximum speed of 100 kmph for passenger trains. However with higher speed trains, savings in travel time are likely to be significantly higher.)

• Mangalore-Mumbai ------ 41h (road), 15h (train) – saves 26h

• Cochin-Mumbai ------ 36h (road), 24h (train) – saves 12h

• Mumbai-Goa ------- 20h (road), 10h (train) – saves 10h

Source for the above statistics

I got a better Suggestion- Rahul Why dont you Make a Railway Accidents Notification Thread like the Aircraft Crash Notifications we have? Make this thread solely for the utility side of the Railways, their New initiatives etc.

India's longest rail bridge at Kochi

The country's longest railway bridge at 4.62 km is completed in October 2009. The bridge is connecting the International Container Transshipment Terminal (ICTT) at Vallarpadam with Edapally. Work on the 4.62-km bridge began in October 2007. About 80 per cent of it is over the backwaters.

The height of the bridge is about 7.5 meters above ground after the entry and exit points, and this allows for water channel movement and road crossings under it at Mulavukad and Chittoor. The bridge has 132 spans — 33 spans of 20 meters and 99 spans of 40 meters — made of PSC girders and catering to electric traction.

A total of 231 girders, each weighing 220 tonnes, were cast at Vallarpadam, transported to the site on motorised trolleys and placed in position by the completely automatic machinery imported from China. Concrete sleepers in the latest design, modern rail fastenings and head hardened rails are being used to build the track over the bridge. About 18,000 tonnes of steel, 50,000 tonnes of cement, 700 workers and 50 engineers of AFCONS Infrastructure Ltd were involved in constructing the bridge under the supervision of RVNL.

The 8.86-km rail link between Edappally and Vallarpadam (ICTT) is being constructed by Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL), a subsidiary of Indian Railways, at a cost of about Rs 300 crore as part of the proposed Rs 2,118-crore ICTT, billed as the country’s first global hub terminal. Dubai Port is constructing the ICTT on a BOT (build-operate-transfer) system for the Cochin Port Trust and the bridge provides the rail connectivity.

Jubilant workers and officials raise their hands after the last pre-stressed girder of the 4.62-km-long rail bridge to the Vallarpadam international transhipment terminal was put in place at Vaduthala in Kochi.
