There are 10,000s of ancient 9mm carbines in service across CAPFs and state/local police forces. Huge market for JVPC

Andhra Pradesh Police Gets Chopper For Anti Maoist Operations

Andhra Pradesh's police chief on Monday made an aerial survey of Maoist-affected areas of Karimnagar district on the new helicopter provided by the central government for operations against the insurgents in north Telangana and adjoining parts of Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh.

Director General of Police V Dinesh Reddy flew over Mahadevpur of Karimnagar district, bordering the two neighboring states.
A statement from the DGP's office here said the new helicopter will be utilised for anti-Maoist operations in Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra and Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh too, which are part of operations in north Telangana as Andhra Pradesh Police are heading a 'unified command'.

Before the aerial survey, the police chief witnessed slithering down from the helicopter demonstration performed by the Greyhound commandoes at Premavathipet, the Greyhounds' training centre, Hyderabad.

The release said that the state police got a chopper for the first time for anti-Maoist operations following the DGP's vigorous persuasion with the union home ministry.

Andhra Pradesh gets helicopter to track Maoists’ movement
In a significant step in the fight against Naxal menace, Andhra Pradesh on Monday became the first State to press a helicopter into service for aerial surveillance and other operations in Left-Wing Extremism affected areas.

The operation was formally launched from the Mahadevpur mandal of Karimnagar district by Director-General of Police V. Dinesh Reddy. Mr. Reddy and other top officers of anti-Naxalite operations boarded the helicopter for an aerial survey of the strategically located Dandakaranya region spanning Karimnagar and Adilabad in Andhra Pradesh, Gadchiroli in Maharashtra and Sironcha and Bijapur of Chhattisgarh. They included Greyhounds ( anti-naxlite force) DGP J.V. Ramudu, additional DGP (law and order) S. A. Huda, additional DGP VSK Kaumudi.

A senior officer said the chopper would be used by the Greyhound commandos. For the present, the helicopter would be stationed at Visakhapatnam.

Briefing reporters after the aerial survey, Mr. Reddy thanked the Ministry of Home Affairs, particularly Home Secretary R.K. Singh, for allotting the helicopter for anti-Naxalite operations. Incidents of Maoists entering the State from Chhattisgarh would be checked effectively by using the helicopter.

Attributing the decline of Maoist movement in the State to a plethora of reasons, including the government’s welfare and developmental programmes, he claimed that people-friendly policing had yielded the desired results.

Asked whether the Greyhounds would be used to fight the Maoists in Chhattisgarh, he said they would not conduct operations in Chhattisgarh on their own. “If the neighbouring State asks for help and shares information, we may think of extending it.”

Maiden air ambulance for troops deployed in anti-Naxal operations sanctioned
A team of doctors, nursing assistants and paramedics have been deputed to round-the-clock man this first "dedicated" air ambulance service for the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), a senior official said.

first-of-its-kind air ambulance service has been sanctioned for troops deployed in anti-Naxal operations and those posted at high-altitude border posts, officials said Sunday.

The ambulance will be on a Mi-17 helicopter platform of the Border Security Force (BSF) and it will be stationed at Jharkhand's capital Ranchi, a recent Union Home Ministry order accessed by PTI said.

A team of doctors, nursing assistants and paramedics have been deputed to round-the-clock man this first "dedicated" air ambulance service for the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), a senior official said.

Some medical equipment like stabilisers and oxygen cylinders will also be affixed on the chopper, he said.

The CAPFs include the Central Reserve Police Force, Border Security Force, Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force, Central Industrial Security Force, Sashastra Seema Bal and the National Disaster Response Force.

he new facility will help saving the golden hour where a trooper injured in action can be provided quick medical assistance, his blood loss can be arrested so that a precious life is saved, he said.

The service is primarily aimed to serve about a lakh central forces troops who are deployed in the Left Wing Extremism (LWE) grid in various states. It will also cater to state police forces personnel who get injured during operations or are rendered sick during deployment in these hard areas, the official said.

However, the ambulance can also be used to evacuate and provide medical assistance to CAPF personnel deployed in far-flung border areas and high-altitude deployment areas, he said.

This is the first time that such a full-time air medical facility has been provided for these forces who are thick in operations, especially in the Naxal violence-affected areas, that are marred by problems of sparse medical facilities and connectivity.

As per current practise during casualty evacuation, a team of doctors is sent on a helicopter that picks up and the injured troops and they provide the first aid medical care.

A number of instances have occurred in the past where excessive blood loss due to a grievous injury led to the death of the troops. An air ambulance responding to such a situation will provide basic medical aid to the injured or sick who can further be evacuated to a nearby medical facility, a senior CAPF commander said.

But, these forces need at least two such air ambulances to effectively cater to the medical needs of the troops spread from the remotest location in Chhattisgarh's Bastar area to the Ladakh region in Jammu and Kashmir, the CAPF officer said.

The other such ambulance helicopter could be placed at Raipur in Chhattisgarh as the main action theatre, vis-a-vis Naxal operations, remains the south Bastar area. It will take less time for a helicopter to reach from Raipur rather than Ranchi, he explained.

The home ministry, as part of the latest order, has directed the BSF air wing to prepare a second air ambulance as soon as it gets the required medical staff.

The BSF operates the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) air wing and a has a fleet of different rotary and fixed-wings aircraft.

Maharashtra police to fight Naxals menace with help of a French chopper.

Mumbai:
While the Maharashtra government is facing huge criticism for its intelligence failure which led to a Naxal attack in Gadchiroli, the state police have initiated a process to purchase a chopper to fight the Naxal menace.

The state police will be purchasing an H-145 chopper from France, and it will be sending three pilots from the state Directorate of Aviation to get specialised training next month to Germany.

The chopper will be devoted full-time for activities in naxal-affected areas, and once the purchase and training process is completed, it will be deployed for action against Naxals.

The state police are already taking action against Naxals however, for several years, police have been demanding a chopper in order to be able to take them on.

The Home department has decided to purchase a chopper from France's Airbus Helicopter, which will be permanently kept at Nagpur.

Chief pilot from state Directorate of Aviation — Captain Sanjay Karve, Senior pilot Captain Mahendra Dalvi, and co-pilot Captain Mohit Sharma have been selected for the 75 days training at the expenditure of the state government. The pilots will will leave for Germany on June 5, and will return on August 14.

Mumbai Police Department has five helicopters.

Similarly, Delhi Police has one helicopter and reportedly will be getting another.

As a measure of increasing efficiency, a few helicopters can be provided. Especially for traffic regulation which is a huge pain-in-the-neck.

When any police department is given helicopters, they won't be advanced ones. They would be old ones only which either the Air Force, Army Aviation Corps or Naval air wing doesn't require.

I believe, after the HAL LUH is in mass production and meets a bulk of the military's need...there will be many takers for it among MHA and States' units.

Single engine, light, locally made, cheap...could revolutionize the way aviation is approached by law enforcement services.
