Ashok Leyland bags Rs 800 crore order from armed forces
The company will supply field artillery tractor, super Stallion vehicles and ambulance



Ashok Leyland has won orders worth Rs 800 crore from the Indian armed forces. The company will supply field artillery tractor, super stallion vehicles and ambulance. In a press release, Ashok Leyland said the company will supply advanced technology products, 450 units of field artillery tractor 6x6 and other similar super stallion vehicles and 825 units of ambulance 4x4.

Vinod K. Dasari, managing director, Ashok Leyland said that the orders for Field Artillery Tractor (FAT) 6x6 and Ambulance 4x4 are in keeping with the momentum witnessed recently in the area of upgradation of technology and resources by the defence forces.



“It also reaffirms our Company’s credentials as the largest defence mobility manufacturer that meets stringent requirements of the armed forces. We, at Ashok Leyland through the ‘Make in India’ initiative stand committed to partner India's Armed Forces in their endeavor to modernise, scale up performance and increase effectiveness," said Dasari.

A Field Artillery Tractor (FAT) 6x6 on Super Stallion platform will function as a Common Gun Tower for all artillery guns. This versatile FAT provides the Army unprecedented flexibility in rapid deployment and utilisation of artillery resources. The vehicle can be used for a variety of applications across logistics and tactical segments.

The air-conditioned Ambulance 4x4 will provide enhanced medical support in the immediate aftermath of injuries. A double-walled insulated body maintains inside temperature, while rear air suspension reduces shocks during transportation. All equipment meets Advanced Life Support standards.

Anyways, we already have 8x8.. Tata Kestrel and Tata LPTA 3138 are few examples.
Yes, I was looking forward to platforms that could be modified to use as TEL for our missile inventory.
When i asked the same question specially replacing TATRA from tow tanks, The representative could not give me a direct answer ..

i was very much looking forward to Tata or Ashok leyland modifying there 8x8s to fit the role tatras are currently doing now in IA.

What In your opinion is the reason for this Not happening sir? I'm sure if the Army gave the nod, Tata or AL could easily design TEL and trucks for hauling radars based on 8x8 or 10x10s..

Tata has good relationship with Cummins. If we're talking license production, they can help with their extensive portfolio.

The Saab-Scania SBAT 111S general utility truck (6x6) was developed alongside the SBA 111 light truck (4x4) in the late 1960s in order to meet a Swedish Army requirement. The two vehicles were designed to be the main tactical trucks of the Swedish armed forces. The first prototypes were completed in 1971. Sweden ordered a total of 2 000 4x4 and 6x6 vehicles in 1974. Deliveries commenced in 1976 and were completed in 1979. Later follow-on orders were made. Over 2 500 trucks of both configuration were delivered to Sweden's Army, Navy and Air Force. In 1986 India ordered 660 of these trucks as artillery tractors to tow Bofors FH-77B field howitzers. Trucks produced for the Indian Army were slightly modified in order to meet local requirements. Production of the SBAT 111S ceased in 1989. Currently these trucks are being gradually phased-out from the Swedish armed forces.

Layout of the SBAT 111S is almost identical to the SBA 111 light utility truck, except engine and configuration. It has an extra axle and larger cargo area. 90% of the components are interchangeable between both vehicles. The SBAT 111S has a maximum payload capacity of 9 t on road and 6 t off road. The baseline troop/cargo carrier is referred as Tgb 40. It has drop sides and drop tailgate. Its cargo area is covered with bows and tarpaulin. The SBAT 111S can also tow trailers or artillery pieces with a maximum weight of 12 t. There is a resupply version fitted with hydraulic crane. This truck is used for ammunition resupply for the 155-mm Bofors FH-77A howitzer and 120-mm KARIN towed coastal defense gun. There is also an artillery tractor version, which tows both of these guns. It has an additional fully-enclosed cabin for the gun crew of 10 and a small hydraulic crane at the rear. The SBAT 111S is also used to carry Giraffe radar system, which is used in conjunction with the Bofors RBS 70 and RBS 90 surface-to-air missiles. This vehicle has four stabilizer jacks which are lowered when the radar arm is elevated.

The forward control cab accommodates driver and two passengers. There is a roof hatch for observation. A machine gun can be also fitted on top of the roof.

This military truck is powered by a Scania DS11LB27 11-liter turbocharged diesel engine, developing 296 hp. It is a turbocharged and more powerful version of the engine, used on the SBA 111. Truck is fitted with a self-recovery winch as standard. Vehicle is also fitted with cold weather equipment, such as an engine heater, battery heater, fuel pre-heater and so on.​

BEML-Tatra T815 VVNC 6×6 field artillery tractor is used for gun towing role in Indian Army. The vehicle is used for towing 130 mm & 155 mm medium guns with their accessories and ammunitions upto 12000 kg weight in terrains. The vehicle has in addition, have regular tiltable cabin, and additional cabin to carry 10 gun crews with their small arms and personnel baggages. A 20.5 K Nm electro hydraulic crane is fitted on the platform for handling of ammunition and a hydraulically operated spare wheel handling arrangement. The equipment is provided with a winch for self recovery and loading of dead tanks on to the trailer. Also the vehicle is provided with centralized tyre inflation / deflation system inside the cabin which enables inflation / deflation of tyres depending on terrain conditions
