Indian manned spacecraft will be scaled-down Soyuz

India's future space program will rely on Russian technology to deliver a cosmonaut into orbit. The future manned spacecraft will be based on the Soyuz, and Russian specialists will help build it.

The cooperation request has already been supported by both Russian space agency Roscosmos and the producer of the Soyuz manned spacecraft Energia.

"India is interested in developing its own manned program. It is no surprise they have turned to Russia, because our countries have been cooperating in the space sphere since soviet times," said head of Roscosmos Aleksey Krasnov.

The capsule will use the same design approach as the Soyuz, but it will be smaller, because India lacks launch vehicles powerful enough to deliver a heavy spacecraft into orbit.

The project is in the early stages at the moment and will take at least a decade to complete, according to Krasnov.

Russia and India have a number of joint space and military projects, including a Moon exploration program and a fifth-generation fighter jet.

The Soyuz type launch vehicel itself will take decades, then what off the air-breathing AVATAR RLV types? I think we will see that in the year 2112!!!

Go to hell ISRO.

Russia Today is not a very credible source.

If the news is true however, it would be a big disappointment :(

So, first human space program will be after 2020.

I thought the plan was to send one by 2016. I guess ISRO's planned Orbital Vehicle would be different from Russia's Soyuz. Anyway it could be two different capsules or one single capsule and that it will be ready after 2020.

That would put the Human space flight program in the back burner.

Russians maybe trying to sell us the Soyuz?? Buying 50 year old tech may not be the way to go, either way if this is an offer it probably means we are close to developing something indigenously?? This seems to be the trend whenever an indigenous system is near completion we get offers.

No LF, we are not close to developing anything, from the beginning itself we were getting all sorta helps from Russians.

Soyuz type spacecraft is the safest so no wonder ISRO has chosen it for human space travel. we always put safety first and then comes technology and cost.

i think manned space mission is a total waste of time and resources on the part of isro.let's be frank -the budget of isro is about 3%of nasa.we not not have an abundance of monetary resource or aerospace scientist in isro. isro should rather concentrate on gagan, inrss, communication satellites ofor our intel agencies, military satellties, bmd satellites etc.

I would rather look at this 50 year old tech as the most reliable and robust tech anyone has ever created. Old? Yes, but credible and most reliable nonetheless.

Going by historical records of defense and space related stuff that India is doing, seeking Russian help seems very credible indeed.

I know. I am talking about the news article from "Russia Today." I find the news article credible, given the history of Indo-Soviet and Indo-Russian cooperation from space to defense.

In other news, a private company offers one way tours to Mars:

Mars One Plans on Colonizing the Red Planet with a Reality Show | Motherboard

Maybe ISRO should buy that company. If they have the tech to send people to Mars, I'm sure they can put one in orbit.
One way tours are easy - you don't have to bother about bringing the tourists back alive. :D

No need for re-entry maneouvres, no need for heat shield, no need for rescue facilities; in other words, even India can do it.

It's only marginally difficult, not as much as you think. Re-entry maneuvers are easy if you have experience with ballistic missile systems, head shields are required for both climbing as well as descent, so nothing extra there and rescue facilities are typically a ship monitoring an over-sea splashdown!
