Tata Lockheed Martin opens new Hyd facility

Tata Lockheed Martin Aerostructures Limited (TLMAL), a joint venture between Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) and Lockheed Martin, on Wednesday launched metal-to-metal bonding facility in Hyderabad, a first in the country.

The metal-to-metal bonding facility, spread over 4,700 square metres, would add cutting-edge capability to the Indian aerospace industry and enable TASL to use this technology across manufacturing programmes for complex aerostructure productions and increased indigenisation. More than 80 skilled employees will work in this facility, which can be expanded further, the company said in a release.

TLMAL is also increasing the indigenisation of C-130 manufacturing by transitioning the production of approximately 2,000 previously imported empennage parts to Tata Sikorsky Aerospace Ltd, another Tata-Lockheed Martin JV. These parts were previously manufactured by suppliers located outside of India. The new facility and capacity expansion are expected to create new job opportunities for skilled workers in India’s manufacturing sector.

“Given the C-130J’s worldwide presence, it is fitting that one of its core components is the result of a strong global partnership that we have with India, Tata and TLMAL,” said George Shultz, VP & GM, Air Mobility and Maritime Missions, Lockheed Martin, after inaugurating the facility.

“We are delighted to expand the scope of our partnership with Lockheed Martin, a testament of TASL’s increasing capabilities in complex aerostructure manufacturing. It is a matter of pride that aerostructure components manufactured at our Indian facility are an integral part of the world’s most successful and advanced tactical air-lifter, which is also being used by the Indian Air Force,” said Sukaran Singh, MD & CEO, TASL.

This is a good development. High time the IN deployed USVs fromitsf ships for high risk ops.

I think the biggest take away from this year's defexpo are the range of domestic developed mine protected vehicles, LSV, medium bullet proof vehicles.

Now it is a matter of CRPF, city police and SWAT teams to start buying them.

Next phase should be to develop them into specialist vehicles like crowd control, command vehicle etc.

India to Locally Build Infrared Tracking System for Su-30MKI

India has decided to design and develop a long-range dual-band infrared imaging search and track system (IRST) which will strengthen the capabilities of the Su-30MKI in detecting ultra-stealthy aircraft like the F-22 and Chengdu J-20 possessed by its adversaries. Only last year, China operationalized the J-20 fighter jets which are made up of radar-absorbing materials that are supposed to make it hard to detect at long ranges.

“The Defense Acquisition Council (DAC) accorded approval for undertaking design and development of the Long Range Dual Band Infrared Imaging Search and Track System (IRST) for SU-30 MKI aircraft under the ‘Make II’ sub-category and subsequently, for procurement of at least 100 IRSTs under ‘Buy (Indian-IDDM)’ category. The system will be able to operate in day and night conditions and will substantially enhance the capabilities of the aircraft,” a statement issued by Indian defense ministry reads.

The Indian defense ministry wants at least 40% domestically-produced content in the system which will be manufactured in any Indian facility. The system will be integrated into India’s frontline aircraft without making any structural changes.

Last year, the Indian Air Force (IAF) while specifying its technical requirements, had put up 30 questions before the prospective vendors.

“Will be equipment be single dome configuration? Will the equipment have stowing capability? Can the equipment be matched with aircraft mission computer software? What are the ICD requirements of the equipment to ensure full exploitation of capabilities of the equipment?” the IAF had asked.

The IRST system is a crucial part of the advanced fifth-generation aircraft as it plays a critical role in detecting heat sinking missiles and locate and destroy enemy targets in radar denied environment.

Reliance investing in India’s first carbon fibre unit

New Delhi:Reliance Industries is investing in setting up India’s first carbon fibre manufacturing unit to cater to aerospace and defence needs, the company said in its annual report.

“RIL is investing in India’s first and largest carbon fibre production line with its own technology—to cater to India’s aerospace and defence needs as well as the specialty industrial applications,” it said.

It had last year acquired the assets of Kemrock Industries to enter the composites business and is focusing on thermoset composites such as glass and carbon Fibre-Reinforced Polymers (FRPs).

“The ability to deliver exceptional strength (similar to or better than steel) at a significantly lower weight is a critical performance attribute of FRPs. Additionally, FRPs can withstand harsh weather, have a long life with minimal maintenance, are corrosion resistant and can be moulded into any shape,” it said.

Vehicle to probe sea surface to hit the market soon

It’s Made In India. A remotely operated vehicle (ROV) developed by the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) with multiple civil and military applications ranging from detecting mines to removing garbage deep in the sea, is planned to be commercially launched in a year.

The unmanned vehicle can scan the sea surface in both shallow and deep waters. It can go up to a depth of 6,000 metres and transmit high resolution photos and data. In shallow waters it can see up to a depth of 500 metres.

Joint effort

For the Indian Navy it is considered of strategic importance. ROVs have been field-tested to map coral reef biodiversity in Andaman and Nicobar Islands a few years ago. The National Research Development Corporation (NRDC)’s Visakhapatnam-based Intellectual Property Facilitation Centre and Technology Innovation Support Centre marketed the technology and facilitated the signing of an agreement between NIOT and L&T Defence recently.

NRDC Chairman and Managing Director H. Purushotham told The Hindu on Thursday that L&T Defence would roll out the first vehicle in nine to 12 months. Each vehicle will cost Rs. 25 crore to Rs. 30 crore.

Mine detector

He said the Navy would benefit by detecting mines planted by enemies and undertake exploring the mineral wealth in the oceans. In future, he said export of ROVs would be explored to tap overseas demand.

Dr. Purushotham said the low-cost buoyant apparatus developed by NIOT could also be deployed in water bodies such as rivers, lakes, ponds and coastal areas. The vehicle is equipped with sensors and one of the functions is garbage removal.

The technology will be licensed for 10 years. “It will be non-exclusive with recurring royalty and a lumpsum technology transfer fee.” Dr. Purushotham said but declined to give details. During field tests, the ROV had taken images of corals useful for developing algorithms to map the coral reefs using sensing techniques, especially satellite remote sensing.

Dassault Reliance Aerospace Ltd begins assembly of Falcon jet cockpit at MIHAN in Nagpur

Nagpur: The Dassault Reliance Aerospace Limited (DRAL) has started commercial production of Falcon – the business jet made by Dassault Aviation, France – at its unit in Dhirubhai Ambani Aerospace Park, MIHAN-SEZ, from April 18. In the first phase, the DRAL is assembling cockpit along with landing gear and other parts.

A team of 50 experts including five engineers and 30 local technicians are working in this project. Expansion of the project would provide jobs to many engineers. The unit set up at the MIHAN SEZ in Nagpur is part of Reliance Aerospace Park which is coming up on in an area of 106 acres. At this Park, the DRAL project is on 56 acre land. In the beginning, production of Falcon jet cockpit and spare parts has commenced. The set up of machinery and actual work was done under the leadership of DRAL’s Chief Executive Officer Sampatkumar and Chief Operating Officer Robert Loock within 60 days. Both these officers were camping in city since September 2107. A workshop for providing hi-tech training for new recruits has been set up. At the outset, five engineers were given six-month training in Dassault Aviation Company in France and the 30 local technicians were trained at a special training centre in Kamptee.

The production of entire Falcon business jet will be done in three years and that of Tafale fighter jet in five years at Dhirubhai Ambani Aerospace Park. India is purchasing 36 Rafale fighter jets worth Rs 60,000 crore. As the offset obligation connected to the purchase of 36 Rafale fighters from France, signed between the two Governments in September 2016, Dassault Aviation has to invest 50 percent of the cost in India. Under this obligation, the Dassault Reliance Aerospace Ltd has commenced the project at MIHAN SEZ.

The DRAL has imported machinery from France for manufacture of spare parts. The machinery reached Nagpur in containers from France via Chennai. DRAL will manufacture components for the Legacy Falcon 2000 Series of Civil Jets manufactured by Dassault Aviation and thus will become part of its Global Supply Chain. These first steps are expected to achieve in the coming years, the possible setting up of final assembly of Rafale and Falcon Aircraft.

The Joint Venture also represents a unequalled Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) by Dassault Aviation of over 100 Million Euros, the largest such Defence FDI in one location in India. The DRAL facility will train thousands of skilled workers in aviation assembly and integration, and lead to huge employment generation in Nagpur and its surrounding areas. It will also attract and house an organic ecosystem of over 200 MSMEs to secure the component and avionics manufacturing needs of Rafale and Falcon Jets.
