The Indian military fears a ‘Chinese aggression’ in less than a decade. A secret exercise, called ‘Divine Matrix’, by the army’s military operations directorate has visualised a war scenario with the nuclear-armed neighbour before 2017.

“A misadventure by China is very much within the realm of possibility with Beijing trying to position itself as the only power in the region. There will be no nuclear warfare but a short, swift war that could have menacing consequences for India,” said an army officer, who was part of the three-day war games that ended on Wednesday.

In the military’s assessment, based on a six-month study of various scenarios before the war games, China would rely on information warfare (IW) to bring India down on its knees before launching an offensive.

The war games saw generals raising concerns about the IW battalions of the People’s Liberation Army carrying out hacker attacks for military espionage, intelligence collection, paralysing communication systems, compromising airport security, inflicting damage on the banking system and disabling power grids. “We need to spend more on developing information warfare capability,” he said.

The war games dispelled the notion that China would take at least one season (one year) for a substantial military build-up across India’s northeastern frontiers. “The Tibetan infrastructure has been improved considerably. The PLA can now launch an assault very quickly, without any warning, the officer said.

The military believes that China would have swamped Tibet with sweeping demographic changes in the medium term. For the purposes of Divine Matrix, China would call Dalai Lama for rapprochement and neutralise him. The top brass also brainstormed over India’s options in case Pakistan joined the war to. Another apprehension was that Myanmar and Bangladesh would align with China in the future geostrategic environment.

A misadventure by China is very much within the realm of possibility with Beijing trying to position itself as the only power in the region.

Strange,I had impression that China is about "to position itself" soon as the 2nd economy and 3rd military power in the world (3rd only be cause of Russian nuclear potential)....

CPC more interested in bye-bye

Hindi-chini bhai bhai: not quite, not yet

So also with India and China. We do not seem to have recovered from our 1962 trauma and China is determined to keep us that way, psychologically and strategically handicapped. Even before India began to grow economically, China was intent on keeping India boxed in within its national boundaries.

And now with growing competition for markets and resources, there is greater Chinese need to restrict India's reach and influence as a possible alternative and successful model of growth and governance. For long, Pakistan has been a low cost hedge for Chinese policymakers and the recent US-India warmth may worry Beijing even though it will continue to pretend public disdain.

VIKRAM SOOD'S PERSPECTIVES...: Hindi-chini bhai bhai: not quite, not yet
china overwhelming desire to be recognised as undoubtbly # 1 in asia above russia , india and japan and they feel only india has th epoplace to match it in the long run , so it has to show force and pre3vent india from ability to grow.

china aim is to stunt india's abiloity to grow. and if they couldnt do it in 1962 then they intento keep trying till they can.

for india , keepin an eye on cat china has is an expensive game of keeping up with the joneses

but somewhere along the line of india can convince china they they will ( political will ) use all resources , nuclear hydrogen to do as much damage as possible , then there is less need to play that expensice aquisition game

so policies like NFU will have to go for a major rethink and fast track nuke weapons - i.e. what the soviets have done in the past

superpower is not only about economy but its more about capabilty to destroy the enemy and stop wars by supreme firepower, military.

if i may take your last sentence and add one more line to it ( which i have been saying all along )

it is finally about the willingness to use the firepower which had been aquired.
