Not as serious one like PAK FA prototype. Nose Dive and skid doesn't mean it damage the plane untill it skid on belly. It's recoverable.
If you look at the right engine you will see it burning out. The interior is probably gutted and a nose dive effects structural integrity which if compromised is a total loss on the frame.

In this case they recovered the fuel in the aircraft and the plane will probably be dragged to the hangar to have damage assessment done on it. Recently an F 22 that belly landed was recovered and is flying again.

It only took 6 years and the price of that MiG-29 to fix that F-22 that didn't have fire damage. It is a strategic asset no longer produced, a MiG-29 can be ordered dirt cheap anytime.

It is not a car to fix the dents and start flying again. It is a common habit in India to fix cars that have been damaged but the same can't be done for a plane. Aerodynamics and structural integrity is important. Also, the main part - Engine and radar seems to have been damaged. These are the ones that cost the most. In addition, there is major costs involved in opening up the entire plane, checking for each component, ordering the damaged ones and then fitting them back with new parts. It is better to simply cannibalise the working parts, avionics, pylons etc

There was demand for a Mig 29, for testing Kaveri.... IAF wasn't prepared to let go any of it's birds due to shortage at it's end. IN should write off this air frame and give it to DRDO/ADA
We should rebuild this one with desi avionics and flight control, experiment with GE-414 plonked, test all the AMCA sub systems & use it for Testing Kaveri & Kaveri's enhanced version for AMCA.
I believe a MIg 29 with Kaveri / GE 414 and our own avionics, is the "sasta sundar tikau" solution which can
solve many problems for us.

If the internals are gutted, what is the point of running this plane? Airframe is not the expensive part. India can get even Su30 which is mostly made in India for this role. Better yet, is the transport planes like IL-38, IL-78 etc

Except we DON'T produce the MiG 29K. The only way Russia would give us another is if we ordered 50 more. F 22 had to be plastered extensively for stealth coating damage and patches. This MiG 29K hopefully saved will be one more asset against Pakis.

Repairing internals is easier than finding an old airframe. Th production line for MiG 29K is silent for now.

Will Russia give so many spare parts for MiG29k for just 1 plane? Just look at the damages:
1) Radar and nose cone
2) Landing gear due to diving nose first with landing gears out
3) Engine (at least one of the two is busted)
4) The wings have been broken.
5) Fuselage dented
6) Internals gutted due to fire.

Which part do you think is usable? What do you think is the cost to replace all the above mentioned parts?

When you buy birds, you don't buy one of each. You buy spares and radars in bulk. Trust me it will be much cheaper to fly the bird to Russia, get her decked out (easy due to MiG 29UPG, even HAL Nashik will be semi - Ok) than wait for 57 MMRCA - N. Buying a new MiG 29K(?) will net you an old airframe with zero upgrades that they will fleece us for it.

Many parts of the airframe like wings and fuselage are also damaged. It is possible to repair it, but the cost will be 75% of the original.

Why so serious?

The Mirage 2000 was on a take off roll when it developed a snag, sources tell @nolanentreeo. Almost definitely an airframe in Bangalore as part of the upgrade program. (File pic)

The Mirage 2000 that crashed today was freshly upgraded at HAL. The 2 young pilots, both Squadron Leaders, were on an acceptance test sortie. We’ve just received the terribly tragic news that both perished after ejection.

Attrition wise we are to get 2 new trainers from France. They are in fairly new condition and inspection team has presumably gone there this month.

However what makes my blood boil is HAL's incompetence. Someone on the production line slackened up and as a result we have two dead test pilots who are among the best aces in the fleet. Someone asked me why I hate PSUs, this is the reason. Thank god for private companies driving HAL out of business.
