Response-10

In a few months, the newest combat agency of the city police, Response-10, will be ready to thwart any terrorist attacks involving gunmen.

According to reliable sources in the police commissionerate office, of the 1,455 sanctioned posts for QRT men, 600 have already been filled. "There will not be any independent recruitment for Response-10 and the men will be gradually selected from the QRTs itself. Basically, they would be men who have not performed well within the QRT mechanism and would be handpicked for Response-10. However, they would be much better trained then those working in local police stations and would be ideal to tackle terrorist gun-battle situations. They would also be entitled to one-and-a-half times more salary then local policemen," said a senior police officer.

The sources added that Response-10 teams would comprise three to four people headed by a police sub-inspector who will work in shifts. Though they would be attached with local police stations, they will not perform regular police duties.

"To begin with, 60 SUVs have been sanctioned for Response-10 teams. Gradually, all teams across the city will have their own vehicles so that they can patrol in their respective jurisdictions," the officer said.

The Response-10 team will also be armed with sophisticated firearms such as MP-5s and AK-47s, bulletproof jackets and other equipment. Sources said the response time for them to reach any terror-struck spot will be five to six minutes.

"If an incident takes place, Response-10 teams from three nearby police stations will be the first to reach the spot and swing into action. QRTs, Force One and National Security Guards, if required, will then follow,"

NSG ('Black Cat' commando) may set up base in Gujarat, instead of Bengal

The central government has accorded an 'in principle' approval to a request made by the Gujarat government to set up a regional centre of the National Security Guard (NSG) in the state which will cover the entire western and northern flank of the country.

Sources said the force is now scouting for almost 600 acres of land in Gujarat and a final decision will be taken once the NSG headquarters in Delhi finds a suitable base in the state.

"Meetings between NSG and Gujarat government authorities are on," the sources said.

The 'black cat' commando force, in the aftermath of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, had planned to get two large regional centres in Hyderabad and Kolkata for stationing more than 5,000 personnel each for operational and logistical purposes during terror attack like emergencies.

While the NSG got a 600-acre plot in Hyderabad for the purpose, it had to contend with only 34.31 acres of land at Badu, near Kolkata, for the same centre.

"Since the West Bengal regional centre did not turn out as large as it was expected, the centre is now planned in Gujarat. If all goes well, NSG will station 5,150 personnel there," an official privy to the development said.

An NSG regional centre will have all the training and combat exercise facilities for the counter-terror and counter-hijack crack commandos of the force, which are at present only available at its centre in Manesar in Gurgaon.

The NSG, in absence of the desired land in West Bengal, had also curtailed its plan to induct the sanctioned number of personnel (5,150) as the Kolkata regional centre could only house 460 personnel on the about 35-acre land against the proposed plan.

Once the Gujarat regional centre plan gets a green signal, the NSG will be effectively able to command the western flank of the country which is at present being looked after by the Mumbai based hub.

According to the post-2008 Mumbai attack plan of the Union government, the NSG has got four new hubs across the country at Marol (23 acres) in Mumbai, Nedunkundram (85 acres) in Chennai, Trimulghery (22 acres) in Hyderabad and Badu (20 acres) in Kolkata.

No he cannot, his order must be passed down to people who are in charge of the strategic forces. ofcourse that order is authenticated and necessary security checks are cleared before he can even say the actual yes.
No, the US President cannot actually fire the weapons in the field. The Nuclear football is an authenticator and a device that passes the orders to people in the field who are manning the missile complexes. Then these people further clear security checks, PALs, etc and unlock the countdown to launch. It is interesting to know that just like rockets, missiles too don't have an actual button for launch, it launches when the countdown ticks to zero.
Ok, so you should be asking why should the PM/President not take the nuclear football rather thanwhy take it. What if an emergency occurs? What if Pakis or the Chinis make a surprise nuclear attack? You don't suppose the Supreme Commander will run to his residence/bunker before he orders a retaliation, do you?
