IAF sends drinking water to Maldives - The Hindu

The drinking water was flown to Maldives on the request made by the island nation's government to India.

The Indian Air Force operated an IL-76 aircraft from Thiruvananthapuram international airport to Maldives on Friday afternoon to provide drinking water to the people of the island nation.

Confirming the movement, a top official of the Airports Authority of India told The Hindu that the aircraft left the international airport around 1 p.m. The drinking water was flown to the island nation on the request made by the Maldivian government to India.

Following this, the Centre asked the Defence Ministry to provide assistance. The Ministry in turn directed the IAF to ship the drinking water in IL-76 aircraft to Maldives. The amount of drinking water shipped was not known.

Airport sources said another IL-76 aircraft movement is likely later in the day from here to the island nation. The sudden movement of IAF aircraft to Maldives created panic among the people and the security agencies.

In a swift response to a request made by the Maldivian Government to the Indian authorities regarding supply of fresh (potable) water, the Indian Navy dispatched INS Sukanyato Male last night.

INS Sukanya, an offshore patrol vessel, was on a routine patrol off Kochi. She was diverted to reach Male at the earliest to render necessary assistance and all the possible help to Maldivian authorities.

INS Sukanya is carrying 35 Tonnes of fresh water and has two Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants onboard which have a capacity of producing 20 tonnes of fresh water per day.

A major fire broke out at the Male Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) generator control panel on 04 Dec 14, causing extensive damage to the cabling of the generator to the Distillation plants and disconnection of water supply. The only water available at Male is stored in tanks and sumps and is being supplied for one hour every twelve hours.

Operation Cactus, visa waiver, tax-free trade, and now this. And those ungrateful fvcks reward us by canceling airport BOT contract for GMR, and giving it to a Chinese company instead. It's not like China would have reached out with that fresh water, in time.

By now Maldives have tasted the reality that during a crisis, it is the neighbors who come for help rather than a friend who is residing 1000 km away. So before initiating any action against India, Male must think 1000 times. We want the Chinese out of our backyard and Maldives must respect this.

It was about that 2012 drama, where they kicked out GMR, and threatened to snap diplomatic ties with India if it interfered with the political turmoil there.

They are not allowing the migrant workers access to the drinking water. Fresh water is available only to those who possess Maldivian National ID.

True. but when Children misbehave you cannot let them die of thirst. Better to let them learn that in times of crisis, who they can actually fall back on.

Only that even if they are children, they are not Mother India's. India is not responsible for their well-being. Good people get exploited often.

Maldives Water Crisis: India Sends 1,200 Tonnes of Fresh Water

India has sent over 1,200 tonnes of fresh water to the Maldives that is facing a crippling water crisis after its capital's main water treatment plant got damaged in a fire, officials said today.

India's INS Sukanya reached Male last night and transferred around 25 tonnes of water to tankers and sintex tanks were positioned on the jetty by Maldivian authorities.Thereafter, the ship moved to anchorage and another 15 tonnes of fresh water was produced on board using Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants. This fresh water would be transferred ashore by water barges arranged by Maldivian authorities and subsequently to tankers. Another Indian Naval tanker INS Deepak has sailed from Mumbai with 800 tonnes of fresh water and is scheduled to reach Male by noon tomorrow, Navy officials said. The vessel would also transfer the fresh water on to the water barges at anchorage. The ship is capable of producing 100 tonnes of fresh water by RO plants fitted on board.

The Indian Air Force, which delivered 200 tonnes of water yesterday, has dispatched an equal amount today through four of its aircraft, official sources said. India was the first country to answer the distress call from the Maldives, launching a massive aid effort.

The spontaneous effort by India was undertaken after External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj was called up by her Maldivian counterpart Dunya Maumoon late Thursday. Swaraj then got in touch with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and got clearances from other authorities.

The Maldives is facing a national crisis after the fire in its capital's lone water treatment plant and much of Male is still without drinking water. Amid simmering discontent, President Abdulla Yameen appealed to the Maldivian public to remain "patient and united, while working with the Government to resolve the national crisis, brought on by the fire that broke out at the Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC)."

Yameen reassured the Maldivian people that a steady and adequate supply of bottled water would be made available until the crisis is resolved.

Yameen said he is grateful to India and Sri Lanka for promptly responding to his appeals for assistance. He also thanked the US and China for assuring their support to the Maldives during the crisis.
Street scuffles broke out yesterday in Male at many places where authorities were distributing bottled water.

The government said today that it would distribute water free of charge to some 120,000 residents, including expatriate workers from Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
A major fire broke out at MWSC generator control panel on December 4, causing extensive damage to the cabling of the generator to the Distillation plants, disconnecting water supply.
IAF has delivered 9 consignments now, more coming. I think when INS Deepak reaches Male the situation will be mitigated, one plant is now functioning.

The other countries are starting to chip in:

China is sending a military vessel filled with water to the Maldives to help with a fresh-water crisis on the Indian Ocean archipelago, China's state-run Xinhua news agency said on Sunday.

A fire at the sole water sewage treatment plant in the capital, Male, has left 100,000 people temporarily without safe drinking water from the tap.

The Maldives has appealed for aid from India, Sri Lanka, the United States and China.

The Chinese vessel is carrying 960 tonnes of fresh water, the Defense Ministry said, according to Xinhua. The Foreign Ministry said 20 tonnes of bottled water were sent on two civilian flights on Saturday.

India is sending five planes with water and two ships with parts that can help fix the machinery at the plant, India said earlier.
The Maldives, a group of 1,190 coral islands southwest of India, is visited by more than 750,000 tourists a year. The country has a population of about 400,000 people, most of whom are Muslim.
Sri Lanka has sent some 1 lakh bottles.

Interesting tweet

Seems like China has some important people in their pocket here, but there also seems to be quite some discontent against the existing govt, amongst people there.

Chinese aid:

The ship that the Chinese have sent is this one:

No 861. Chang xing Dao
It's a sub rescue boat, that has a desalination plant on board, it was on a mission in the IOR . (read on the other forum)
