MV Seaman Guard Ohio: India police arrest crew of US ship

Police in India say they have arrested the crew of a US-owned ship accused of illegally entering Indian waters with a huge cache of weapons on board.

Officials say MV Seaman Guard Ohio was detained on 12 October by the Indian Coast Guard and is currently anchored at a port in southern Tamil Nadu state.

Its 35-member crew include Indians, Britons, Ukrainians and Estonians.

The ship's owner, AdvanFort, said the vessel was involved in supporting anti-piracy operations in the Indian Ocean.

But there have been differing accounts of the chain of events from the Indian authorities and the US-based security firm.

Yet again the private security industry is in the frame, with India saying the British and other contractors it has arrested were not authorised to have arms and ammunition in its waters.

The ship's owner, AdvanFort, is one of a growing number of Western security companies involved in protecting shipping from pirates in the Indian Ocean.

India supports those efforts with its own navy. But it has drawn a line with the crew of the MV Seaman Guard Ohio, accusing them of "illegal activity" for failing to provide sufficient paperwork for the weapons on board.

We're still waiting for the company's side of the story.

The Indian government was criticised last year for its handling of the case of the two Italian marines on anti-piracy duty who were accused of shooting two Indian fishermen. With elections approaching it will want to be seen to be taking a firm line in this latest case, to avoid giving any new ammunition to its opponents.

Ok guys, this could be a Chinese ship, a US ship, or a ship from Timbuktoo. Just don't rely on Indian media. As per BBC, it is a US ship, or perhaps the crew of two different ships were arrested. Too much rumour-mongering going on.

Re: Chinese ship carrying weapons detained by Indian coast guard

Can't blame them. Their source, the Indian media, is known for having Sinophobia.
I couldn't agree more. No matter what happens, the blame is on China. This is a result of self appointed 'patriotic' netizens trying to prove their love for their country by ranting on the internet. Indian Media has no more credibility than CCP.

3 held for unauthorized supply of fuel to detained U S vessel

The 'Q' Branch CID of Tamil Nadu police probing the ingression of a United States-based Vessel with heavily armed private security guards on board into Indian territorial waters, today detained three persons for illegally supplying fuel to the vessel.

As the crew members of the vessel 'Seaman Guard Ohio' ran out of fuel, they had allegedly purchased 1500 litres of diesel from a shipping agent through local fishermen, after they intruded into Indian waters without informing the port authorities, police said.

Based on a detailed investigation, the Q branch police have taken into custody three persons for supplying fuel unauthorized to the vessel, which amounts to smuggling. The crew members were already facing a case under various Sections, including Motor Spirit and High Speed Diesel (Regulation of Supply, Distribution and Prevention of Malpractices) Order 2005, Essential Commodities Act 1955.

Re: Chinese Ship Arrested by Indian Coast Gaurd near Tutiorin Tamil Na

Were these weapons meant for the Maoists or create trouble in Seemandhra?
Seems for Sri Lanka and to show that they are behind the Sri Lanka establishment.

I don't think Indian media and Chinese media outlets can be compared. While Indian media is certainly guilty of unprofessional journalism, skipping research and sensationalism they are certainly not a government mouthpiece. The Chinese media outlets however are completely controlled by the CCP and have never been critical of their own government.

None could match the conformation bias of BBC or NYT though.

I agree that unlike Chinese media, Indian Media is not government controlled. What really bothers me is sensationalism, branding every single incident as "Breaking News," lack of confirmation of 'facts' being presented, and demagoguery. What brings Indian and Chinese media on the same level is the lack of credibility, regardless of whether it is a result of government control or lack of professionalism.

Police arrest two more from arms ship; deny suicide bid by crew
TNN | Oct 20, 2013, 06.01 AM IST

TUTICORIN: A day after 33 members on board M V Seaman Guard Ohio were remanded and lodged in a central prison at Palayamkottai in southern Tamil Nadu, police remanded two other Ukranian nationals who were left in the vessel which is now docked at the port.

The vessel was intercepted by the Indian Coast Guard off Kanyakumari coast on Saturday and was towed to Tuticorin after it was found carrying arms.

On Saturday morning, Siderenko Valeriy, the chief engineer of the ship, and Dudnik Valentyn, master of the ship, were escorted from Seaman Guard Ohio to Muthayapuram police station. After sustained interrogation, they were produced in the judicial magistrate court in Tuticorin late in the evening. Judge Akila Devi remanded the two till October 31 and sent them to the central prison in Palayamkottai.

The action against the two Ukrainians raised a few eyebrows as when rest of the 33 members on board the ship were remanded on Thursday, the police said that Valeriy and Valentyn were left behind to carry out maintenance work in the ship. Police had earlier said they were not to be held until the company makes alternative arrangements for the ship's maintenance.

Television channels reported that Valeriy attempted to hang himself in the vessel...

There are many medias like 'The Hindu' which downplay Chinese intrusions. We have many pro West, pro Middle East and pro Chinese medias. But we have only very less pro Indian medias.

This could be because of misleading information being given by the crew.

Further the Captain has not been furnishing the papers till forced to do so and that too in fits and starts.

One crew member, I think the Chief, tried to commit suicide by wanting to swing himself from the flagmast.

Whatever for?

There is something that does not add up.

And so the confusion.

India media has gone way low, one day they make someone king and next day bring them down, standard of news and news person is going low day by day.
but at least its govt free. Its same as listening to hindi commentators for a cricket match with no knowledge of whats happening.
Before bringing news to public they must investigate its correctness and then show. For me its lack of professionalism.
I have a friend in a news network, he told that they get from reuters etc but they chose news which they believe will be most likely to get them higher rating.
So now a days every news is breaking news whether an actor falls sick or someone saw god in dream etc.

U.S. ship crew freed on bail

Thirty-five men, including the crew of the detained U.S. ship 'Seaman Guard Ohio,' were granted conditional bail by a local court on Thursday.

Judicial Magistrate C. Kathiravan asked each of the detainees to produce a surety bond for Rs. 10,000.

All of them were directed to sign at the 'Q' Branch police office here at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. every day, until further orders. Indian Coast Guard ship 'Naikidevi' apprehended the U.S. ship on October 12 on charges of trespassing into Indian waters and carrying weapons illegally.
