Re: Chinese Ship Arrested by Indian Coast Gaurd near Tutiorin Tamil Na

Hindu says they had no papers and could not give a proper explanation about why they were there or why they were headed towards vizag. The company owning the ship also has not offered any explanation. Strange...

Re: Chinese ship carrying weapons detained by Indian coast guard

yes technically it was registered to a company in Sierra Leone but the fact that the ship was a "made in china" product and was carrying arms and ammunition from china speaks for itself!!well now you guys will understand who's the real boss in this part of the world.we'll detain anything which is off the books in the IOR and there's absolutely nothing that china can do about this....
Sorry to burst your bubble, but this was an American ship.

the source they quoted does not state that the ship comes from China.

now that it turns out to be an American ship, the thread has lost its charm, better close it.

Not to worry, this incompetent Indian Govt will release the ship and also apologise.
now that it's an American ship, it's most likely to happen.

No.

The Indian Govt will posture to show that it can 'talk tough' with the US.

Its great for the sagging morale during the election time!

If it were a Chinese ship, our worthy Foreign Minister would have said it is only a small 'acne'.

TN police arrest crew of US vessel, seize weapons

The Tamil Nadu police on Friday morning arrested 25 private security guards and 8 crew members who were on board 'Seaman Guard Ohio', the U.S. vessel that was detained by the Indian Coast Guard off the Tuticorin coast last week.

Investigators seized 35 arms and 5,680 rounds of ammunition from the vessel. Two of the 10-member crew, including the Captain, were not arrested to facilitate maintenance of the vessel berthed in the VOC Chidambaranar Port.

According to police sources, a case was registered by the Tharuvaikulam Marine Police on October 13 against crew and guard on board the vessel owned by AdvanFort, a U.S.-based company that provides anti-piracy services. A case under the provisions of the Arms Act 1959, Essential Commodities Act 1955 and Motor Spirit and High Speed Diesel (Prevention of Malpractices in Supply and Distribution) order 1990 was registered and transferred to the 'Q' Branch CiD police.

Investigation revealed that the vessel was found in the territorial water of India and was in possession of arms and ammunition, without valid documents. Also, the vessel had drawn about 1,500 litres of diesel from private sources in the country by violating the established procedures, police confirmed in a statement. The transfer of the fuel is also alleged to have taken place within the Customs Waters, which investigators said, amounted to smuggling.

The accused persons, most of whom are claimed to be former members of the US, UK and NATO Special Forces, will be produced in a court and remanded in judicial custody. They would be moved to a Chennai and lodged in Puzhal Central Prison. Since the suspects included some British, Estonian and Ukranian nationals, steps were taken to inform the respective embassies through diplomatic channels, police sources added.

Re: Chinese ship carrying weapons detained by Indian coast guard

BBC News - MV Seaman Guard Ohio: India police arrest crew of US ship

Police in India say they have arrested the crew of a US-owned ship accused of illegally entering Indian waters with a huge cache of weapons on board.

Officials say MV Seaman Guard Ohio was detained on 12 October by the Indian Coast Guard and is currently anchored at a port in southern Tamil Nadu state.

Its 35-member crew include Indians, Britons, Ukrainians and Estonians.

The ship's owner, AdvanFort, said the vessel was involved in supporting anti-piracy operations in the Indian Ocean.

But there have been differing accounts of the chain of events from the Indian authorities and the US-based security firm.

...in a statement released on Monday, AdvanFort said India's coast guard and police allowed the vessel to enter the port to refuel and shelter from a cyclone which hit India's eastern coast last weekend. The company even thanked officials.

It added that all weaponry and equipment on board was properly registered.

In recent years piracy has emerged as a major threat to merchant ships in the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea, with ships and their crews sometimes hijacked for ransom.

There have been fewer attacks recently, partly because more armed guards are now deployed on board.

On Friday, police said that 33 crew members had been taken to a local police station for questioning. Two had been allowed to remain on the vessel in port at Tuticorin.
