India nuclear plant guard kills three in shooting spree

NEW DELHI: A paramilitary officer charged with guarding a nuclear plant shot and killed three of his colleagues on Wednesday in a shooting spree at their base in southern India, authorities said.

It was not immediately clear what provoked the attack, which took place early Wednesday morning at a Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) base in southern Tamil Nadu state, around 10 kilometres away from the Kalpakkam power plant.

The CISF is tasked with guarding key government offices and monuments such as the Taj Mahal, as well as nuclear plants.

"They had assembled for morning duty when he opened fire," CISF spokesman Hemendra Singh told AFP. "We are looking into the matter and checking what triggered this. But we immediately detained him and handed him over to the police."

He said the officer, Vijay Pratap Singh, was highly experienced and "in shock" after the attack.

"It is not as if he is a new fellow, he has been doing this service for 24 years. After questioning there will be more clarity on why it happened," he added.

Operations at the nuclear power plant were unaffected, Singh said.

The Kalpakkam nuclear power facility was battered by a massive tsunami in the Indian Ocean in 2004 that left 6,170 people dead in India.

Water seeped into the facility that is located on the coast after the tsunami hit. It resumed operations a year later.

India hopes to build many such plants as part of its ambitious plan to generate 63,000 megawatts of nuclear power by 2030 — a near 15-fold rise from current levels, according to the Nuclear Power Corp.

The incident involved CISF personel with access to sensitive installations. The fact it was close to a reactor makes it more suspicious.

the incident happened at a CISF camp not nuke facility and was probably related to PTSD or some feud.. anyways welfare of our boys and such incident needs to be looked into with all seriousness no matter where it takes place

When it comes to the safety and security of nukes, one needs to look way beyond the worse possible scenario. Nuclear scientists have disappeared and found dead recently and now CISF incident. Could this be a conspiracy?

again... it was NOT a nuke facility... i was 10 km away at a CISF camp. And yes any incident relating to our boys dying due to fratricide needs to investigates thoroughly and measure taken to prevent it.

Even if he managed to get inside the reactor, he wouldn't know what to do there. How to destroy a nuclear power plant - That is something you don't learn in school books or google.

Sure if you say so, no worries. Business as usual.
But such incidents are taken very seriously by western nuclear agencies doing business abroad. Good luck cinvincing them.
No need to convince them, India's nuclear market is on the rise, these nuclear corporates will compete to invest and reap benefits in India. These tactics are used some times to make India to agree terms with them.

Where does the issue of the safety of the nukes come into play in a nuclear power plant?

I fail to understand why this controversy has been raised.

Last heard, all nuke warheads are safe wherever they are kept and there is no terror groups operating that are so powerful, as in another country, who can snatch, coerce or sweet talk in the name of being Religious Warriors the nukes.

The West is afraid of such an issue, as mentioned above and require assurance that nukes held by the country is safe.

The Western concern about the that country and their nukes cannot be replicated for a guard off duty in a barrack 10 miles away going berserk.

The West requires no convincing from India since they already are aware that Indian is a responsible country and not a chaos pretending to be a Nation as is the case of the other country that gives the world migraine.

Imagine a Nation where their own Naval personnel are in cahoots with fundamentalist terrorist to blow up their own naval assets!!

God is kind that India is not in such a daft situation that belies sanity and credibility of being a Nation.
