If India wants to develop as a biggest democracy in the world this problem should be tackled more efficiently in the future. India holds the 5th spot not the top spot. Yes it is a pretty serious problem, seems to be mostly in the form of bonded laborers, child brides, child beggars, sex trafficking.
In absolute terms India holds the top spot with 14.28 million slaves followed by China's 3.24 million and Pakistan with 2.05 million. Uzbekistan and Russia are the other two ciuntrues to have more than 1 million slaves each.

If you guys are looking at absolute numbers, India also has the second largest free population, in the world. yaay? Absolute numbers make no sense in these things. Also there are many illegal immigrants who work for less than minimum wage in western countries, which is also exploitation, that alone is estimated to be a few tens of lakhs, which would be far more than the numbers shown for western countries. That maybe so, but slavery has many interpretation, including slavery imposed on a Nation by religious fanatics, who do not allow normal societal activities to be undertaken. Further, honour killing is also a form of slavery and that should also have been taken into consideration. That is also a form of slavery. So should spouse beating be an input. Polygamy is another input. Women being cloistered and not permitted to move individually is yet another. The inputs can be selective and so there is no 'absolute term' for slavery.
India has more slaves, than combined Swedish and Finnish population. I always thought that the child slaves in the movie "Temple of Doom" were just imagination of Hollywood. Maybe they did it on purpose to show the world the scale of your problem.

Things are not bad as portrayed in the movies. Now a days people are having awareness, But some families who are poor and cannot afford the living make their children work. With the increase of GDP these social problems will go.
