Tony,
You should choose more credible sources to start bash India threads..
Your source is a blog...hardly credible. Its just a point of view.
The source does not mention the agency that carried out the study, it just mentions "a study is conducted and written by environmental research centers at Yale and Columbia universities with assistance from dozens of outside scientists. The study uses satellite data to measure air pollution concentrations.". But by which agency?

Data of only Delhi was taken - and the report concluded that India is the most polluted country in the world!!...you look very silly by using such sources.... try harded and you could have found this - Global air pollution: what is the most polluted country and city in the world? | Environment | guardian.co.uk
Your source is about as good as mine. I didn't start this thread with India-bashing in mind (is this really possible here in a forum run by indian nationalists?), rather serving as a reminder that people who live in glass house should not throw stones.

Now let's say India' air is in fact not the world's absolute worst, and that China's air is just as bad. This would however amount to little comfort. If you compare China with India, you'll find that China burns 5-6 times more coal, has several times more vehicles on the roads and has a manufacturing sector 10 times larger. Now image one day India reaches where China is today, go figure how bad India's air might become?

you are right but what happen if on the name of money we change face of our villages

have you every stand other side of AC (air conditioner ) you will fell so heat and that we are giving to nature
Our villages are model of inefficiency and backwardness, they have to change.

Well that is the principle of an Air Conditioner, and that heat is quickly dissipated.

Guys,

Don't bring in China into this. Let's discuss the air pollution of India. There are other threads discussing the Chinese air pollution.Anymore off-topic posts will henceforth be deleted
Not , please, China VS India topic always absorbing . and discussing Chinese pollution is not off topic because both of us need Tibet mountains to clean our lung and soul. we all are dirty nations, let's be disgusting forever, the white man also will have a fun to see we moch each other here.

Indeed Beijing has the cleanest air in the world.

They had to throw out by order the industries during the Olympics!

Since I stay in Delhi, I can say that the Air Quality in Delhi has improved y-o-y.

It is the greenest capital in the world, public transport is run on CNG, Delhi Metro is one of the busiest in the world, cars and bikes are governed by Bharat Stage emission norms, polluting industries aren't allowed to operate within city limits.

Delhi's main reasons for bad air quality ranking is dust , considered a particulate in air quality parlance.

Indian subcontinent's air quality will never be ranked high, because we are naturally dusty countries. In fact Delhi is more dusty than even Dubai.

==
The reason for dust is that we have some of the highest percentages of arable land of any nation. More than half of this arable land is used for only one crop a year and is barren for upto 9 months. High arable land translates to low forest cover which keeps dust low as root systems stop soil erosion and barrenness that leads to dust.

Most of our arable land is underutilized because of lack of irrigation - not lack of water. We have a surplus of water but it is mismanaged. So to summarize

Dust is due to high percentage of underutilized arable land which is due to pathetic irrigation systems - A problem the government has just not tried to address effectively.

In urban areas the tree cover is pathetic. Delhi has the highest vegetation cover among large cities in India with 17%. With such numbers naturally dusty should be expected, though there is nothing natural about it.

Historically they were models of self sufficiency and maintaining a balance with nature.

I know in today's competitive world its not possible to go back to the old model.

Beijing has awful air, it's well known. But Beijing also happens to lie just a short distance away from the Gobi and is home to 5 million cars. What excuses does Dehli have for being ranked among cities with worst air. Many polluted cities are situated in cold, dry climates with lots of industries nearby. India is basically an agrarian society, sits in humid tropics, why is India's air this bad? What would happen if one day India too becomes industrialized, fod for thought for all of you.

Look at the Map of India and find out where the Thar desert is located.

Apart from the reasons mentioned, pollution in Indian cities at large is due to poor infrastructure leading to a lot of vehicular pollution and also industries that are located in or around the city and often with conditions that are not conducive to environment. Industrial waste is still discharged in rivers or sea.

Have a look at Bangslore which has seen exponential growth in vehicular traffic but bad infrastructure means jams all the time and pollution is unbearable.

I thought this thread is about air pollution in India, why are people dragging China into this thread?
Title is "India has world's worst air." It is about China because they have the world's worst air.

Do you realize that the kind gansta-like attitude you are exhibiting there makes you look real bad! I fully understand your dislike for China, but you are showing it in not very smart way. :tsk:

Yup! If I were a Chinese I would be more worried about the air I live in.

Here the dust is very higher than toxic pollution though!
