I think the disconnect results when the average soldier is portrayed with these high end tools which he may not have a use for.

Even in the future, better armour and weapons is something that is essential for a soldier, not palmtops. A soldier needs to carry out the orders given by his CO, period. He just needs the proper tools to be able to do that. He certainly does not need to "scan the battlefield".

Field computers and data devices may be necessary for the unit commanders (to get the big picture of the immediate battalefiled or to receive data and instructions from their COs), but displaying that device on a soldier creates this confusion. I don't believe the DRDO gives much thought to presentation.

The official statements, or at least the media reports of those are even worse. The soldier guiding the aircraft is a perfect example.

About calling in air support, in the future even regular troopers (or unit NCOs/ JCOs) might be required to do that. The technology for that is already there, developing an operational doctrine with the IAF (or at least the Army Aviation Wing) is mroe important.

it is the future man we want to adapt to new technology, in future the war zone is even more dangerous so we need all type of equipment to every one. if CO/NCO/JCO is injured and took back what the company do..? if F-INSAS is there even from New Delhi they order a jawan in J&K region, through NCW.

Any plan to equip foot soliders with night vision, infra red sights and UBGL. These equipment serve as force multiplier.

pamtop and other toys will not change the role of soilder, only it will give him more tools for situational awarness, communication, spying, information sharing, etc........

suppose if soilder sees some thing which is of great value in his opinion, he can take pic and send it on secure connection through his pamtop, along with cordinates of the area,

general will go through that data and send instructions back to the soilders to either distroy it, capture it or maintain status quo, he can also ask the soilders who will be his eyes and ears on ground to cordinate attack with IAF........

not to mention situation where views of the experts are to be called for that type of data would be of great help at the HQ, this data can also be help in trainning purpose.

other things like GPS too help the soilder if their is any emergency to locate him and to send help if that is needed, or to drop supplies.

A 4th generation Helmet Mounted Night Vision Device costs a mere Rs 80000-90000 and is openly available for public sale.Why cant the Army purchase it in huge quantity which might even help in reducing the per unit cost.....?

i am very excited about what drdo is claiming to develop.i thing the palmtop is for the soldier to pay minesweeper or hearts in a tense battlefield scenario to releive from stress, and to the helmet mounted display is for the soldier to watch porn during the firefights.
