12 off the shelf +18 produced in India
Not yet. This order will be for just 12 off the shelf. Indian production of 18 units will be discussed further in future and it doesn't make much sense anyways.

The Indian navy could use the US-2i for a number of roles, such as
  • crew/cargo rotation at sea,
  • rapid troop insertion to uninhabited islands/islands with no airstrip
  • Casualty Evacuation at sea
  • Rescue of survivors from downed plane/capsized ships
  • supply of critical spares to units at sea,
  • rapid response missions for Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief,
  • Visual / Radar Surveillance at long range, Long range Search and Rescue Mission and
  • Range :-4,700 kilometers,
  • Probable station:- A&N Command.
  • Crew:- 8.pilot; copilot; flight engineer; navigator; radio operator; radar operator; and two observers.
    • SAR crew:- Up to five medics or rescue divers could be carried as well. The aircraft could accommodate 12 stretchers and three sitting passengers, or 36 sitting passengers.
    • Troop transport mode:- 100 Combat ready troops.
  • For SAR French Thales Ocean Master search radar
  • Short take off and landing in 3m waves in sea state 5.
  • Rolls-Royce AE-2100J engines, providing 3,425 kW (4,590 SHP)
  • Ceiling of 6,100 meters (20,000 feet)
  • Glass cockpit
  • Navigation:-GPS guidance
Comparable aircrafts are Canada’s Bombardier and Russia’s Beriev. But both cant land/take off in choppy 3m waves of sea state 5.

ShinMaywa is not new to India as it began operations almost 20 years ago in India. It has supplied more than 80 aerobridges to Indian airports and established state-of-the-art pumps for waste water treatment across the country.

But not sure if it can retrofitted to ASW role, though we have it adequately covered that role by 12 P8-I stationed at INS rajali
One of the most critical capabilities that I don't think many have paid any attention to thus far is the ability to rapidly support CBGs and/or SSBN/SSN FAR away from Indian shores, this is something actually very very few nations would have the capability to do.

As it stands the only way to get emergency supplies/crew or to evacuate an injured/sick crew member from a deployed vessel/sub far out at sea is to sail closer to land and send your integral helo or call a shore-based helo to you. A US-2 could reach almost anywhere in the IOR from a base in India and do so much faster than a helo and it can also land whereas a helo could only hover and thus have limited time on station.

When India starts putting serious numbers of SSNs and SSBNs out to sea (not to mention CBGs) this could prove to be a true game changer and invaluble asset.

$1.3 billion for 12 units.....
Yikes.:rage:
If India can swallow $5.4 billion for 10 units (C-17) then this is surely a very reasonable deal especially with local assembly.

One other capability is infil/exfil of covert forces like marcos near deserted coastlines. .... with last leg of infil/exfil through zodiac boats...currently only countries with nuke subs can do that....nuke subs are effective while facing a hostile beach though

Another useless import......
Will make Dalals & fan boys very happy
If you want IN CBGs to operate close to shores of our nation then certainly you don't need such amphibious aircrafts. However, if you which to send CBGs into deep oceans then you have to have aircraft which can land on and refuel on water as you will be needing C-SAR capability in sync with the combat radius of Carrier born fighters.

Since we will be buying Rafale M(preferably) or F/A-18 E/F both with long legs we need such aircrafts to conduct C-SAR in support of downed pilots. And this is just one of many uses or roles.

Wasn't it 4.1 Billion dollars for the 10 C-17s ?
