NEW DELHI: After reports alleging incursion by Myanmar army in Manipur, India has called for a joint border working group between the two countries to address the issue of undemarcated boundary areas. Emphasizing that Myanmar and India have close and cordial bilateral relations, the foreign ministry sad it has suggested to Myanmar that the contentious boundary near pillar 76 be demarcated.

"We have through our embassy in Yangon suggested to Myanmar the setting up of a joint border working group to address the issue of demarcation of pillar 76. Meanwhile, Assam Rifles are in touch with Myanmar army to resolve the matter on the ground," said MEA spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin.

He denied though that there was any intrusion by Myanmar forces.

"We have been informed by ministry of home affairs, which oversees that part of our border, that there has not been an intrusion," he sad, adding that the reported construction work was carried out on the Myanmar side of the border.

It has been reported that Myanmar army crossed over into India and set up a camp recently at Holenphai village, which Myanmar claims as its own, in Moreh. According to Indian authorities, the village lies in an area which is not clearly demarcated.

The state government had earlier urged the central government to ask Myanmar to stop construction of the border fencing till a joint survey of the area was made by both the governments.

Manipur governor Ashwini Kumar on Tuesday visited the area near Moreh where Myanmar authorities are reported to have erected fences. According to PTI, a high-power committee headed by state principal secretary home had visited the area on August 26 and it would submit a detailed report to the state government which would forward it to the central government.

Manipur chief minister O Ibobi Singh had earlier said that some border pillars in the area were missing and some were covered with thick grass because of non-maintenance. He had urged the central government to settle the issue with Myanmar authorities at the earliest.
