There are two populations of wild buffaloes in India- Assam and Bastar/Central India. The latter was believed to be genetically purer and ranged across Chhatisgarh, Telangana and upto Amravati in Maharashtra.

"With the inputs from local villagers, we were tracking wild buffaloes for the past several months in Indravati (national park in south Bastar) but we were not getting exact evidence of their presence. Due to LWE (left wing extremism) activities in the region, it was tough to search thoroughly in the deep forests," chief conservator of forest (CCF) Anup Kumar Shrivastava told PTI.
"But few weeks back our trackers spotted two herds of wild buffaloes numbering 10 to 12 animals each," he said.

We have a really large population. Still we did not cause extinction of any of them.
Consider this with what the others did to the Dodo's, Tasmanian Devil, Passenger Pigeon, Black Rhino etc.
Won't rabies affect leopards if they prey on rabid dogs?risk of rabies transmission to humans and costs associated with dog sterilization and management.
